    Daenerys also recast?

I was pretty bummed by the recast for Catelyn, because I thought Jennifer Ehle would be great in the part, but I can't say I'm much bothered by the prospect of losing Merchant. I saw her in the Tudors, and she was pretty forgettable...

Feist still worthy of a read?

The problem I have with Feist's later books is that he seems to have forgotten how to create well rounded, sympathetic characters. The Conclave of Shadows trilogy was just terrible for this. Talon was so damnably perfect at everything and anything and so utterly lacking in depth and dimension...

Filming updates from the HBO TV series

I used to live just down the road from Doune Castle. It was also used in 'Monty Python and the Holy Grail'. "Fetchez la vache!"

    Had it with epic fantasy

The problem I have with the long delay between books is that by the time the next one comes out, I've forgotten a lot of what happened by the end of the last one. That's a real problem with ASOIAF, which has lots and lots of small but important details. And I know I could re-read the books...

Casting news from the TV series

McCann was also in 'Hot Fuzz'. He played the big guy from the supermarket who could only say 'Ahhhrrr' and 'Nahhhhrr'. His bio says he's 6ft 6" tall. Wouldn't he have been a better choice for Gregor Clegane?

HERESY! Any summaries of the series?

What about the Wikipedia articles? The summary of the first two isn't very detailed, but the third book gets a bit more attention. I would post the links, but the forum rules won't allow me to do this. Just type the book name in as the subject.

    Bernard Cornwell

I stopped reading the Sharpe novels after "Sharpe's Tiger". I made the mistake of going to a signing / reading event for the next book after that. Maybe we caught him on a bad night, but Cornwell was an arrogant, rude, patronising turd. It was a very unpleasant evening, and I think he lost a few...

    Gates of fire

But they wouldn't really have been speaking English, so you can consider it a translation on the author's part :-)

    Todd mccaffrey is ruining pern!

I think a big part of the problem is the size and length of the Pern series. It's been going for so long, and so many novels have been written, that it's all getting a bit old and tired (IMHO). It's hard to find anything new and innovative in it any more. The books probably sell like hot...

    Philip K. Dick fans...help!

I personally think 'A Scanner Darkly' is a frickin' masterpiece - one of the best sci-fi novels I've ever read. I also loved 'Ubik', 'Martian Time Slip', 'Now Wait For Last Year' and 'The Game Players of Titan'. I didn't enjoy 'The Man In The High Castle' that much - it just didn't develop the...

    Would you recommend David Eddings?

Like many people, Eddings was my first foray into fantasy, and although I have very fond memories of the experience, it's highly unlikely I will ever repeat it. Once you move on to better stuff, you realize how one dimensional and simplistic his writing is. I enjoyed things enough until The...

*Spoilers* (TotSH) Relationship between Pug's family and royal family

Feel free to mention away - I'm the weird kind of person who doesn't mind knowing what's going to happen in a book before I read it. I blame George R.R. Martin and 'The Red Wedding' :-) I would be a bit sad if the later books focus more on the magical side of things at the expense of what's...

    Raymond E Fiest: pronunciations?

The one that always got me was Ugyne Carvallis. How in the seven hells do you pronounce that? Is it supposed to be a weird variant of Eugenie?

    Annoying errors/continuity

I've just finished reading the Krondor trilogy, and there was one thing in there that bugged me in terms of continuity. When Jimmy and Gamina have their infamous meeting in 'Prince of the Blood', you get the impression that it's the first time they've met. But in Krondor : The Betrayal...

*Spoilers* (TotSH) Relationship between Pug's family and royal family

Hello all, After an absence of many years, I have recently returned to the world of Midkemia to catch up on everything that has been published since 'Shards of a Broken Crown'. I'm now in the middle of 'Talon of the Silver Hawk', and it all seems a bit different from what has come before...

Other Recommendations - for the unenlightened

George Clooney and Steven Soderbergh have apparently been trying to make a movie out of it for the last few years. Given what they did to "Solaris", it's probably for the best that it's stuck in development hell :-)

    Book Suggestions

I've just finished the first two in the series, and they are very readable. My only complaint is that he plays fast and loose with how things really happened. Most people won't know or care, but I'm a Greek & Roman studies major, and it annoyed the hell out of me

    Pressfield - Gates of Fire

I read "Gates of Fire" a few years ago, and had to stay up through the night to finish. And I also blubbed my eyes out through the last few chapters. It's an excellent book, but the author's later works are unfortunately nowhere near as good. It took me three attempts to read "Tides of War"...
