Try Nine Princes in Amber by Roger Zelazny. Many books in that series and what a great series it is!

The length of SF novels – quantity vs quality?

Well, one day you'll find yourself with two book in hand and only enough money to buy one. Suppose one of those books is a slim volume you can finish in 5 or 6 hours and the other will last you 5 or 6 days. All else being equal, i just bet you'll pick the book that lasts longer. Part of this...

The most significant SF novel ever?

Picking the most significant is a tough call. I cannot help but keep in mind the time factor in all this. When Capek first wrote about robots in the 1920s and introduced the word to the world, it was extremely significant. But that significance has faded with time; nobody gets very excited...

The length of SF novels – quantity vs quality?

As other have mentioned i also prefer quality first. But many, many times, i'm looking a a huge selection in the store and i don't know which of the two or more books in hand are "quality." So then it all comes down to economics. I keep everything i read, so i went over to the closest...

I live next to the biggest book store in the world...

Powell's is nice, but not always the cheapest store around. I buy new paperbacks from Borders because they send me coupons ranging from 20-30% off almost every week.

    Venus on the Half Shell

I may be late on this topic, but i would recommend The Lovers, one of my favorite sci-fi ever. A great story, way ahead of its time.

    Science Fiction in your neighborhood

I am currently reading "Dies the Fire" by S. M. Stirling. I am enjoying the book very much and Stirling is an author i also like very much. The curious thing is that the book takes place in my neighborhood, i.e., the Willamette Valey of northwest Oregon. It's odd (to me) to have a book take...

    Dreams/Terrors

I have had many sci-fi related dreams all my life. Many of them are very emotional, where i'd wake up feeling extremely sad or with deep yearning for things lost. I was able to lucid dream only once. I was dreaming something quite ordinary and realized i was dreaming, so i decided that since i...

The books that shaped your mind

The first book that shaped my mind was On Beyond Zebra by Dr Seuss. At age 5, i memorized the entire book, before i knew how to read. It is truly science fiction, exploring the strange lands and creatures that exist beyond our alphabet. Yes, it's a children's book, but the concept of...

Do you read books more than once?

I have often re-read books. The Lord of the Rings has been read so often, i can now go the passages i like and just read those. Little, Big by Crowley gets read every few years (how i love that book!). Same with The Sirens of Titan and Lord of Light. Some books cannot be absorbed in the...

Who would you like to be?

I want to explore strange new worlds, seek out new life and new civilizations, and boldly go where no one has gone before. When i wrote those words many years ago, who knew i'd be proclaiming them here for the first time?

    Fantasy/Humour

I just bought and placed on my to-read stack Wen Spencer's "Tinker." It appears to be a humorous fantasy. I've never even heard of this author before buying this book.

Immortality, who wants to live forever?

Well, it's a bit more than an opinion. All the people who have ever died are still dead. Try going for a walk with one of them. If i understand you correctly, you're saying all the dead people in world are still alive? Sorry, but i don't understand how a dead person can be called immortal...

Immortality, who wants to live forever?

Uhh, OK, i think we were talking about the kind of immortality where one doesn't die. All the dead people i've come across seemed to stay that way.

    how many people watch anime?

I think there is a fundamental reason why anime is not as popular in the US as might be expected. Most Western nations have traditionally viewed cartoons as a medium for children's entertainment. The Japanese has always held the view that animation is a medium usable for any film project...

    Dialects and accents in books

Years ago, i bought for my mother a book of Fairy Tale told in Brogue. It is, unfortunately, unreadable. I'm sure anyone from Ireland could enjoy it, but for us Americans, it was incomprehensible. Dialects are fine, but if they slow the reader down too much, then it just becomes annoying.
