New Equations on the Drake Light (Life and Death, Cosmic-Style)

Unfortunately the Drake Equation and this one has no scientific foundation because we are working from a sample of ONE. All we can say is that life is likely to exist elsewhere and since Drake we have discovered very many exoplanets and now think stars having planets are common. Drake was...

    Why Sci-Fi/Fantasy?

Though there is non-historic and non-mythic fantasy. I agree that myth and history are common foundations of much contemporary setting fantasy.

    Roman poor dead at 30

The Lead Acetate is FAR worse than lead pipes or lead tankards.

    Why Sci-Fi/Fantasy?

Mmm... for semi-realistic. Fantasy isn't just Mediaeval, Sword & Sorcery, Twilight or Harry Potter.

    Planet X

Here is a nice list List of Solar System objects - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Traditionalists don't like it, but we now only have EIGHT known planets. At least Pluto didn't get demoted to the Minor League of 707,664 planets! Solar System Members Stars: 1 (Sun) Known planets: 8 Mercury...

Barnes & Noble's big new idea to save publishing?

Yes, I think I read that Café type shops and independent Clothes/Boutiques account for 75% of failures and most fail in first year.

Knight effigies with crossed legs on tombs

Ah, like IM, Twitter, facebook, Skype and TxtSpeak :D There'd be records, like there are for other things. I don't think it's specifically a "modern" thing as it's quite a while ago the "code" mythos started, not because of standards, but because people like simplistic satisfying explanations...

Barnes & Noble's big new idea to save publishing?

Why not do both? I suppose you need capital and an Alcohol licence. You don't need a permit to sell comics?

Knight effigies with crossed legs on tombs

I wondered about the modelling as most of these are made after the original is dead and buried. I presume some suitable worker was dressed in armour and used as a model. Does anyone know how they did the carvings?

use a x10 power rated transistor amp to the valve one and don't over-run it and it can sound EXACTLY the same.

    Planet X

seems to be confirmation? Astronomers discover distant dwarf planet beyond Neptune Or perhaps this is an extra one, and not the hypothesised one in this thread? I think the hypothetical planet 9 has a 20,000 year orbit?

Knight effigies with crossed legs on tombs

Without going into detail that's a naive myth. The modern world is very much less standardised than people imagine. The Romans, Greeks Egyptians and Babylonians did have some standards. The Romans in particular had to introduce urban building standards. The modern world is just as varied.

yes. Some are awkward to get for restoring old collectable radios. The DK92 about $2, but the similar USA 1L6 is $10 to $20 due to horders. They are East European made in factory owned by USA Entrepreneur. Price is what people are prepared to pay. He bought rights to the Mullard name from...

Lets Talk About Things Science Cannot Explain

Time is something Science can't explain. This article is a bit simplistic and amusing. The quantum origin of time In some respects misleading, but the BBC doesn't really do science as well as it did 30 years ago. Yes!

There is a regular sound of the frame going up and down and the shuttle going back and forth: ^clack^ - >wish> - click - vclackv - <wish< - click - ^clack^ - >wish> - click - vclackv Clack= Frame up or down wish = shuttle moving click = shuttle at end. That's a simple loom with most basic weave...

    Lack of standards in technology

Less than people imagine, just a tiny few examples: DC power jacks can be reverse polarity BBC & ITV used an identical connector for Outside Broadcast power, but wired catastrophically different. Unlike EVERYONE else in Science & Tech, NASA used to use both Imperial and Metric, a mix up meant a...

... And when your characters end up dead.

The only English one I ever watched was Heartbeat (and only the first series). Technically I can receive TV with Spanish programs, but I've only watched travelogues on it. I've not had Hispasat for quite a while as my motorised dish is out of commission.
