    Military SF intro [1000 words]

Let see, how do we make the sgt bad and Roche good. How about it's the 15th attack that day, they haven't slept in 4 day's, Roche's thumbs are cut up because she has reloaded her mags so many times and she can feel the blood in her boots from the torn blisters. Petrov is hounding her on the...

    Warhammer Novels

Yeah,I'm not sure of the outcome, but the author of house to house (I can't remember his name, awesome book though) definitely expressed his desire for legal action. I was tempted to boycott his third book after a number of people I know declared the same, but it got over myself and bought it...

    Military SF intro [1000 words]

I have 14 years military experience in a combat unit, which Is probably why I'm picking up stuff you're not intending. I'm about to go to work so I'll get back to you later on the other points. Crack and thump: you have it totally wrong. The crack is the super sonic crack of the round as it...

    Warhammer Novels

First one is great, second one got him sued for plagiarising "house to house" about the battle of Fallujah, and the third one is all kinds of awesome.

    Military SF intro [1000 words]

It's a commander's job to ensure their troops are competent, that's why they're promoted, because they're better than the men they lead (at least in theory). Roche's feelings of unfairness are the basis of why it seems whiny. She is whining about the specific thing she is supposed to be doing...

Do You Have Books You Constantly Read Over Again?

I re-read practically all of my favourites, so about 20% of my collection, at some point or another.

    Military SF intro [1000 words]

It reads fine as a simple explanation of a squad/section attack, but first impressions, your lieutenant strikes me as slightly incompetent and the sergeant is a bit heavy handed with the micromanaging but he's just doing his job. In that regard, it is an absolutely accurate portrayed of...

    Warhammer Novels

Hope is the first step on the road to disappointment. I am the epitome of Grimdark! It's very British, born out of Thatchers bleak, grey Britain like the comic 2000ad. The only problem is over the years they sort of lost the "in joke" aspect of the whole thing and started playing it far too...

What was the last movie you saw?

I really enjoyed cloud atlas. Last movie I watched was Saving Private Ryan after a discussion with my battle buddies about how nobody has done combat scenes quite so good before or since (band of brothers is close, but not quite). I was 14 the first time I saw it in the cinema and the first...

What Game Are You Currently Playing?

I got obsessed with BF 4 when it first came out. I got to division 1 in carbines and overall skill then had to quit, it's like a drug that makes you angry! recently I've been playing Fez, a pleasant indie platformer, and luftstrauser, a mental game about planes.

Best Neal Asher book to start with?

After posting I noticed this thread was a year old. Doh!

Looking for suggestions (modern sic-fi or fantasy)

I enjoyed most of the novels on your list. If you are up for a military (well mercenary) style post cyberpunk type story (purely from a high tech/low society angle) then I'd suggest the veteran by Gavin Smith, and it's sequel, war in heaven. I loved both of these books

Best Neal Asher book to start with?

Gotta be Gridlinked. Everything sorta spirals outwards from there. Or start with the first one in the owner series, which has a very different feel to the polity novels.

    Future Warfare

We'll if I'm honest, I doubt we will be fighting big space battle within a century, so all my ideas probably are wrong. It will probably be defence installations around the earth, moon and mars (let's face it we're not going anywhere else soon) and any combat will still focus on land battles. I...
