I have used it when my daughters have travelled back and forth from New Zealand (Eldest lives there, youngest visits her sister)

What medium do you primarily use to consume books?

I tend to listen to Audiobooks these days. I can listen while I am doing other things, like in the garden (phone in my pocket lol)housework, craftwork, etc...

    Agonizing over word count

While you are writing don't agonise over the word count. Get your story down. Leave it for a while then re read it and start to edit. You will soon see where you waffle. You can pay for an editor, or have a fellow writer read it and tell you when you are going round in circles so to speak. I cut...

    Manuscript formatting woes

Simple: when submitting follow the agents/publishers requirements. Just have a basic draft you can alter when required. Just a tip, don't over think every little detail that way madness lies.

Bit early to decide for me. Cost and travel etc. But hoping to go.

    Profanity in your writing

Your story, your choice. Personally it doesn't bother me in books or films, as long as it suits the situation, and character. Best use of, "bad language" I feel, is in Andy Weir's, The Martian. It's the only way the main character can, "let rip," so to speak about their situation, fear, hope...

    Books vs show

The overall story arc is the same, thankfully. And covers the first 6 books. The societies, politics etc are more or less spot on. I loved the detail they had transferred to the screen about how dangerous and harsh life is out in the solar system. The characterisations suffered quite a bit...

    The Expanse Season 6

Yep, the books are a hell of a lot better, very detailed, and I suppose slow, as there is a lot of character development, politics, the various societies, also a number of characters have been omitted, or condensed into others. Losing the Alex character altered the story line a lot, but that...

    The Expanse Season 6

Yep, though I doubt if they do do any more they will have that gap of time, which is a shame. I found it nice to have a group of 60 plus folks (even though they were on anti aging meds according to the books.) kicking the lights out, and running rings round the bad guys. Also the final fate of...

    The Expanse Season 6

All I can say that in the book it is handled better. The space battles are long drawn out affairs due to distance, so the strain of them grinds people down. Inaros keeps sending messages to Holden and his crew, baiting them. Sometimes Holden replies, some times not, and Inaros keeps showing him...

    Character Sheets

Ghostwriter, or writing for a franchise, i.e an officially sanctioned , Star Trek, Star Wars book etc totally different kettle of fish. First off, ghostwriters, these normally work closely with a person to write their book, re interviews, research etc, normally these are memoirs or...

    Character Sheets

No. Is the simple answer. If you find it useful to keep track of your characters traits, looks, behaviour etc, then do them. Any mistakes can and will be picked up during editing. The main thing is to get your story down. On a side note; so many folks say you must do this or that, most of what...

    The Expanse Season 6

I believe this season takes the story until the end of book six, where there is a natural break in the story. The last three books in some ways is a different story arc set some 30 years after. So it makes sense to finish the current overall story arc now. For information book nine, the last...

    Paragraphs

When writing dialogue; as each character speaks, you should start a new paragraph. Also a new paragraph can be used to emphasise the action. This is taken from the manuscript draft of one of my published novels. Example: “You alright, sir?” Adams stood, handing his mug of tea to Archie as he...

    Short Story or Novel?

Just put down your stories. Just write and see what happens.

Feeling unsure about my opening (again)

My advice is to finish your story. If you keep going back and altering the beginning then you find you don't get much progress. Just keep ploughing on and get a first draft done. You can make notes, re changes you want to consider as you go, but you can find that once you start editing you may...

Chapter length, whats the ideal page count?

That's more or less standard for submission of manuscripts, it might need tweaking to a publisher's requirements, but I personally find it is best to write in this type of page set up. It is best to totally forget number of pages this might equate to in a published book, or ebook. That is...

Chapter length, whats the ideal page count?

There is no set length for chapters, and don't let anyone tell you otherwise. Writers can and do use varying lengths in the same book. Just concentrate on pace, characterisation, plot and place and you will be fine.

    Prologues and Epilogues

It's up to you if you use a prologue or an epilogue. As with most things beyond basic grammar and laying out a manuscript, it is what suits your story. Don't get side tracked by thinking you should do this or that. Just make your story as strong as you can, the rest will fall into place.
