    Does page count, reviews matter?

I used to care about page count wanting as long books as possible. Now I don't care anymore, I just buy whatever finds my fancy. I never read the blurbs on books until after I've bought them so those doesn't matter either. As for reviews I only read them after I've finished a book to see if...

Julie Crisp posts on the topic of sexism in sff publishing

I think most people write what they like to read and that most sci fi gets promoted with a male audience in mind. From her numbers this would mean that YA and urban fantasy gets pushed more towards the female reader and therefore spawns more female writers. This is all speculation of course...

Another question! Hitting someone, this time.

If you're bigger than your opponent I'd figure a good hardy push would acctually do the trick. No reason to complicate things. Or grabbing and pulling could work as well.

Discussion thread -- SEVENTY-FIVE WORD WRITING CHALLENGE June 2013

Thanks Perp, that pretty much sums it up like I wanted. Sadly I do feel I posted it too soon as I now see several ways to improve it. Ah well, ain't that always the case?

Discussion thread -- SEVENTY-FIVE WORD WRITING CHALLENGE June 2013

I Think my story ended up at 60-something words so I wasn't worried. Thanks Eloise for commenting on my story and sorry about yours.

June 2013 -- SEVENTY-FIVE WORD WRITING CHALLENGE -- VICTORY TO SLEEPYDORMOUSE!

Re: June 2013 -- SEVENTY-FIVE WORD WRITING CHALLENGE -- READ THE FIRST POST! Wanderer They called him wanderer ’cause that’s what he did. Reckoned that’s what he was good at. Told me he reached the end of the world once. “Mighty drop that,” he said. What did he do then you ask? Turned...

    Your First SF Story

Nemesis by Isaac Asimov I think. Don't even remember what it was about though and it didn't sell me on the genre. I turned to horror instead for several years before returning to SF.

    Is really a bad word?

Agreed phyrebrat, I'll remove the weakly but I think I'll hold on to the really for now. This is just the first draft anyway. Thanks all.

    Is really a bad word?

Thanks guys and yes Brian, I kinda figured that I did overuse it. I just didn't know if I should get rid of them all. I usually use it as an intensifier as FH said but at the sae time the story is close third so I'm trying to sneak in the main characters voice a bit. I just finished up...

    Is really a bad word?

Quite a way into my latest musings when I notice that I use the word "really" alot. Is this a no no in english or allright or allright but only when used sparingly and properly. Of course I understand all words should be used properly but I know quite a few words in swedish that I can usually...

Angry Robot are doing it again.

Ah yes, the old classic. It’s the system, that’s just how things work, you have to learn to adapt. Sink or swim, right? Well, what if I want another alternative? What if I want to build a boat? What if I want to walk around? What if I want to drain the seas and walk across the parched ocean...

Angry Robot are doing it again.

God damn it. Alright, so I'm obviously wrong here and I should return to practicing my hobby in silence. But before I go could someone at least agree that you need-- No wait, that's to strong a word. But at least it helps to write good litterature. You can have a million people discover you on...

Angry Robot are doing it again.

So what you're saying is no. You gained a new reader through a writer friend, not through your blog. Thanks. What a lovely sentiment. I'll keep that in mind.

    We Have Always Fought

Apart from being a bit full of herself the article seems sound enough. I was more moved however by her telling of peoples indifference or unwillingness to move until someone else took that first step. Now I've always said people should write the characters they want to write. The characters...

    What next for Joe Abercrombie?

I hope Abercrombie leaves Logen alone from now on. Since the first trilogy I waited for his return eagerly but after Red Country I'm not sure I knew what I wanted. He got some good scenes, sure, but I left it feeling a bit sour, like he'd been shoehorned it as fanservice (beacuse that's what I...

Which Authors Do You Buy in Hardback?

The ones that are cheap. Besides I don't really like hardbacks. Too bulky. Though pocket is too small, hard to flip through and easy to lose ones place. I guess I prefer trade paperback(?), though the term does confuse me somewhat. I've never been good at these terms and us swedes do use other...

Where did all this first-person present tense come from?

Man, long thread, hope it's okay that I don't read it and just respond to the OP. I don't feel there are that many first person present tense stories at all. I almost exclusively read third person past tense and it seems to be the norm in almost all the books I'vé read. The only first present...

Angry Robot are doing it again.

But I think one question remain. Does anyone really discover writers through their blogs, twitters or facebook accounts, or do people start following them after they've read their books and liked them? For me, I've read a bit of Abercromibes blog and Richard Morgans, but as bloggers I found them...

    Writing what you don't know

These are all good tips and I'd like to elaborate on my original question. I recently started writing a near future novel. My plan was to start the novel i Stockholm (were I've lived for a year when I was younger), then move on to London (that Iäve only visited for a weekend), and move on to...

Angry Robot are doing it again.

I think good Writing should be its own marketablility. Also, call me old fashion if you like, but I much prefer when the writer stands for the art while the publisher handles the buisness.
