    April Reading Thread

I'm reading The Railway Navvies by Terry Coleman. I've always thought they'd be a great subject for an alternative history novel where the tunnel work uncovers an ancient secret or civilisation. I also have Pyramids by Sir Terry Pratchett on my bedside, but the Navvies are winning out at the...

Megabump but I'm listening to this on audio book right now. It feels very Warhammer 40k. The introduction to one of the characters, and his punchball torture method is prime games workshop style material! This is my third Banks book. I have read: - Consider Phelbas (I gave it 3/5, can't...

It's funny to go back. I haven't written anything since this piece. It feels quite current. I should write again..

    December 2020 Reading Thread

I've not posted here for ages, in fact it had slipped out my consciousness entirely until I clicked on a friend on Goodreads and it all came back to me! I am reading: Truckers with my oldest son. We are about 65% through. A lot of it goes over his head, but he is invested and loves Grannie...

    Your introduction to Fantasy/Scifi

Sat in the sun on Blackpool beach as a little boy deeply engrossed in this hefty tome. From here I found Brooks, then Hobb, Williams, Feist.... Sci Fi came later. I was at university and picked up Flowers for Algernon. That started an obsession with reading all the SF masterworks, which I am...

    April 2018 reading thread

Tales of Majipoor by Robert Silverberg. I've never actually read the series, picked it up from a library book sale because I recognised the author. Serviceable well written stories but got the feeling I'm not getting the full "story" out of each one. Napoleons Wars by Charles Esdaile. Someone...

THE BOOK REPORT: How many books do you own?

A rotational shelf of 50 or so, I read them then trade in at Barter Books for new to me second hand ones.

    Hanging Tree

Hello. I'm just playing about with an idea in my head. I'm pretty new to this writing business so if this is terrible I apologise. Thanks for looking :) This was my sister’s tree until she was taken from us. She used to snuggle down into these roots like arms and laze away the summer. She...

    Peter F. Hamilton

Agree on most of the comments here. I like his books and worlds but I don't like how long they take me to get through. I wish it could be condensed just a little because his ideas are first class.

It's May - what are you reading?

Norse legend in space. Pretty cool so far, with characters spanning several periods of human history.

    Virulent (Idea)

Hello all! I'm just starting out on a new idea, could someone please let me know if this is a good introduction to a story? I'm from a medical background so I hope it is clear enough for those who are not. All advice appreciated. Especially grammatical as a struggle a little (lot) on what to use...

It's March -- what are you reading?

Empire State by Adam Christopher. Meh. I'm 104 pages in, so I'll finish it but so far, so underwhelming.

It's March -- what are you reading?

Britain AD by Francis Pryor: An Archeology based study into Anglo-Saxon Britain (That controversially challenges the mass migration theories) The Midwich Cuckoos by John Wyndham. I'm going to have read all his major published stories soon. It will be a shame because I love his style.

It's February. What are you reading?

Finished The Reality Dysfunction. It was a long old slog at times, but the last 500 pages or so were mightily enjoyable. The sex is a bit gratuitous also but I'll probably read part 2. I have picked up The Midwich Cuckoos as it is short, and Wyndham is yet to let me down!

It's January. What are you reading?

Finished Little Brother and thought it was fantastic. Currently reading: Which is an absolute monster and so I'll be reading it for Feb too most likely. Listening to: via Libravox. 3/4 of the way through and it's quite the text.
