I knew I had read a book by Christopher Brookmyre and by looking at Goodreads I see I read this back in 2018 but remember very little about it. Probably wont be very useful for you but I gave it 3/5 and didn't go on to read any more books by the author. Looking at a few reviews it came back to...
I see you have mentioned Tom Holt, have you read any of his K. J. Parker books? If not I would at least try one of his series or standalones. There's no sword and sorcery, a lot of dark humour and his characters are always really well written.
Perdido Street Station - China Mieville. I read the sequels straight afterwards. All great at the time, no idea if they would hold my attention 20 years on.
Ship of Fools - Richard Paul Russo jumped into my head. Space horror with strong characters. It ended perfectly set up to be continued but the author seems to have not published anything for over 15 years.
Watched loads of horror films in my youth at the time of the VCR boom, never really liked them to be honest but admiting that then wasn't really an option when you were a teenage boy. Despite that I always felt the first two Omen films were really good. Another I still have unpleasant memories...
Pistol episodes 1 and 2. A colourful, badly acted mess. Even though I know a lot of the events happened it all feels unbelievable on the screen. I feel a bit grubby watching it but I got a free 3 month trial of Disney+ with my new phone sim about 2 months ago and haven't watched anything except...
This is a great book. Along with Stalin:The Court of the Red Tsar it's probably the best biography i've read. I learned a lot from both and should really give them a re read. Hope you enjoy it.
I read this many years ago in bed with a cold verging on the flu under the influence of lots of medication. In the version I have there's 189 pages of very small type. It has the novella The Fifth Head of Cerberus along with 2 other stories which should be read with it. I really can't remember...
I've read all 6. Sundiver Isn't really representative of the series, it's very small scale and in large part a whodunnit. I didn't enjoy it and delayed carrying on with the series for quite a few years untill I had nothing else handy. When I did, It definitely improved and I enjoyed reading it...
Brent Weeks Lightbringer series would seem to meet all your criteria. I ditched it myself after the first 3 books but I'm far removed from it's target audience and it seems to have been very popular with YA.
Ready Player One. Being the perfect age to get every reference I found the book was nothing special but a nice quick nostalgia trip. As soon as the CGI VR stuff started in the film I just couldn't bear it, "you're too old to waste time on this rubbish now" I told myself. I ended up watching 3...
Glad I could help. The only thing that rang a bell in your description was the line about mercenaries, far flung colonies and taxes. I should probably give it a re-read myself.
Only seen the film once but i've never forgotten the intro to Denis Villeneuve's Incendies with Radiohead's You and whose army? playing and the harrowing bus scene. It's a great film.
I've had it for about 35 years and still not read it, tried once I think. Bought on one of my regular second hand Michael Moorcock trawling expedition to Scarborough on the strength of the wacky cover and title. Why on earth I've kept this over some of the books I've given away over the years I...
