3,000th Post Something From The Past

Hi Perp, Without adding anything further to the expert grammatical critiques - which as always are so well done - I would just like to say that I thoroughly enjoyed the work, and it certainly has great potential! I wanted to read more, and I think that says it all? :) Nice One:cool:

    How Big??? Chapter Sizes

I've never looked at my chapter lengths before this thread turned up - so I was interested to see how they measure up. I have an average of 5000 words per chapter, spread over 30ish chapters+prologue+epilogue in The Source. As I haven't checked before, I have certainly noticed that the shorter...

Enhanced ebooks - a good thing?

You're welcome :) Would certainly recommend paint.net too - superb. I use if for artwork and even with my limited personal abilities in this field, managed to produce pretty decent results. Lots of free-plug ins, too. :D

    Dealing with negative Feedback

I would certainly accept that; and on reflection, I guess any of us who write sequels, or series etc. are in fact writing to a formula of sorts. My comment is aimed more at the formula used by those such as Mr Forbes in the novels of his I have read - which to be frank, became a great game...

    Dealing with negative Feedback

Not at all - the key word is entertains IMO If we all liked the same things it would be a boring old world, but as writers, or aspiring authors, we'd all like critical as well as sales success as it indicates that people are actually reading and enjoying our efforts - which to be honest is why...

    lighthouse sequences

Another good reference work for all things to do with sailing etc. is Reeds Nautical Almanac - it covers the whole British isles, Northern Atlantic, and the entire European coastline from Denmark down to Gibraltar, Northern Morocco and the Azores. The Almanac is considered as a bible to sailors...

Enhanced ebooks - a good thing?

Hi Matt, there are lots of excellent quality programs and software that may suit your needs, which are Open Source, and free. Check out Sourceforge.net and have a look around. A lot of it is cross-platform, too. Don't know if you've ever used open source software, but would recommend dipping...

Terry Pratchett: My daughter Rhianna will take over the Discworld when I'm gone

Pleased to hear that his assistant Rob was at hand, and was able to revive him - well done Rob. Still sad to hear, though, and hope he continues with us for a long, long time. TP is an absolute genius, and as you say, big shoes for his daughter to step into ...

Does anyone read the poems and excerpts at the start of books?

I tend to read everything at the start - but can be left disappointed or confused if there is no relevance to a poem etc. Long lists of names and acronyms at the start can put me off - and I think are better at the back of the book as a reference, if needed. Multiple maps can also be a little...

    Description and pacing in fantasy

Well, I'm willing to look at it again with more mature eyes one day, but it certainly didn't leave an impression on me the first time that it was one to read again ... and I have lot's of books that I will happily pick up and re-read. As you say, it could have been the beginning that put me off...

    Description and pacing in fantasy

LOTR was heavy enough going - though I was a lot younger ... 21 I think, Hobbit was pleasant enough, but the Silmarillion was a complete nightmare! Couldn't get on with any aspect of it, and I think it's a reference for purists only

    Description and pacing in fantasy

Tight and fast is good, so like me, you won't be counting the Silmarillion on your favourites list :D

    Description and pacing in fantasy

Well, they do say with age, comes wisdom ... but who wants to be old? Unless you're 16 dreaming of 18/21 ... but by 40 we'd all like to be 21 again :) I decided to stick at 21, and stop counting Birthdays a long time ago ... or was it last year?;)

You could have a good point, Hex. Less-maps, less words, more action?:)

    Description and pacing in fantasy

As it often said that assumptions can be the mother of all ****-ups, I try not to make too many ;) Though I don't mind people assuming I'm younger or smarter than wot I really is :)

    was vs were

I think of it like this: Singular: He was, she was Plural, They were, As the crew are plural, I would use were, and the same for multiple crew(s): The subdued crew were ushered out. or: The subdued crews were ushered out. -Bill

    Toward or Towards?

Certainly no Grammar Guru, but as a Brit, I'd go for Towards, and if North American, Toward. It's a Maths, Math thing. ;) When I have this dilemma, I try saying it aloud and see which sounds best in my voice ... so how would it sound to a friend or stranger if you said it aloud? Do you say...
