If you're not scared, you're not doing it right?

As to the OP, scared is what anyone should be in any endeavor that's worthwhile and shows a semblance of personal effort. If you push yourself into the unknown, it's always a good thing to have an element of scared. My gripe is with the people the try the dentist approach. As in a description...

Well said. Couldn't agree more with this.

    eBooks vs Paper in Self-Publishing

I'd have to agree with Ian. I started backwards as well, however. It seems as though the paperbacks sell more steadily. I'm guessing it is the virtually limitless pool of ebook offerings that pop up daily. To those that have made steady sales on ebooks, congratulations. That's ideally where...

    How do you stay creative

"Take Breaks" is the answer for me. My imagination, so I've been told, hasn't left me. I have no trouble coming up with any number of strange scenarios and things to place around them. My problem is, I get bogged down by too much streaming from my thought process. Breaks allow me to collect the...

    Spam books on Amazon

It is disgusting. The single mother bit set me off as well. It's amazing how people try to justify this garbage. I suppose the best thing that could happen would be the problem becoming so rampant that major changes would be forced upon the vanity publishing world. I haven't even received...

what do we want from a sequel

I have a few years in between each book, in my trilogy. There is a very distinct ending in each, and the time passing sets up the rebuilding scenarios. I plan to write a series of short story compilations that take place in between, prior to, and after, the trilogy. Various characters have minor...

    How do we write?

I'm with Mousey on this one. For me, music is part of the inspiration phase. Many genres/styles of music are utilized to spark my creative process, but they all must disappear when I get down to it. Edit: Thanks, allmywires. Seemed meandering, but I got to the point ;)

    How do we write?

I build the entire skeleton of the piece, and then go to town on it. I read and edit after every single chapter, without fail. Afterward, I see if it'll hold as I test the structural integrity. I view the process as pouring sand into the same spot, over and over (edit every chapter on...

    Why hide the weird?

Actually, that's an interesting angle for the OP. The faeries wouldn't want humanity to see the lesser known, less appealing elements of their society.

    How much detail?

    There's a chart I missed somewhere?

    How much detail?

If we could only break that whole equation down into a perfect little chart, we'd all be in business ;)

    How much detail?

    That's my ultimate fear.

    How much detail?

I tend to view the amount of detail needed as it affects the flow of the story. Obviously there will instances where the reader will need to be given more information, but detail amount is one of the primary things that I obsess on in my editing. I have introductions and glossaries for the more...

    Why hide the weird?

Or traffic in general, even. Some form of modern day mechanism that would seem as baffling/frightening as their magic would seem to some of us?

    Why hide the weird?

Fairies would only show their magic on Youtube. Hence, people would think it's some grand hoax and blame it all on Photoshop or some such.

    Tips to help hinder writers-block.

I constantly read my own material and plot character backgrounds and storyline. When something even resembling WB approaches, I reread, edit, or work on a shortstory. It always frees up the crowded highways of the brain and gets traffic moving again. I think the spare shortstory angle is a good...

To swear or not to swear

I rarely swear in real life. It's reflected in my first two novels, so far. Swearing, as far as I'm concerned, should be used for effect and impact. Used too much, it pretty much puts me off the read.

    When to do the reveal

I've run into this little breadcrumb dilemma, at times. I find that whole loaves of bread are sometimes more effective. Though, I often use abrupt character kill-offs, and a variety of story shifts, so it may be hard to pick up the trail.

    World-building - Dividing the Pie

I'm similar to Jake in my method. I compile a number of Glossaries and pull from each as needed. I have no current plans to share ALL of my worldbuilding documentation with the public, but in time it's not an entirely bad idea. Thanks for the thought seed. I shall water it and see what color...
