doing a creative writing thesis on SF and needing recommendations

hi folks! can anybody recommend books and/or literary criticism involving science fiction? i'm doing a sci-fi novella, and if you guys know any that have very strong existential themes (although most sci-fi, if not all, has 'em, IMO), especially if these have anything to do with colonialism...

Worst Science Fiction/Fantasy you have read.

While I respect opinions that differ from mine, my friend and fellow LOTR fan overheard her friend saying that Twilight was the new Lord of the Rings. Ah well. I remember reading Eragon and being very frustrated that Paolini could write that book at his age. With context, I guess the book...

Worst Science Fiction/Fantasy you have read.

LOL haha, okay! Hmm, haven't really read any vampire books (shame, shame I know), not my cup of tea but I respect the genre. So when I heard about this Twilight thing, I was just saddened.

    a pretty bad fantasy book

simply put, if a story, any story, called for the use of sex and violence, then i wouldnt mind, seeing it there. For instance, in Herbert's Dune series, since Duncan Idaho's character is pretty much described as a womanizer (more or less), then a description of him sleeping with another...

    Episode 17: Company Man

Yes, I agree that this is one of the best. Before this episode, HRG's character is best described as questionable. In fact at some points one may seem to loathe him, but in this episode he redeems himself. it's also interesting to get more background info from the Heroes online graphic novels...

    Season 2, Episode 1

Hmm...why do I have a funny feeling that Hiro might "take Kensei's place", actually becoming the legendary hero instead? just a guess [too bad for us who just watched 1st ep of second season] so lemme get this straight: the necklace around Peter's neck suggests that the Haitian wiped his...

    The worst SFF story ever

As they did so, a bunch of leprechaun gold coins fell out of their pockets. Mixing with cosmic [fart] gas, they turned into the first Deluxe Autobots and Decepticons.

    Big mistakes in sf.

I do agree that when it comes to sf, even Frank Herbert can get a little too carried away with his writing. But I guess that's why I enjoy reading these books so much, that they're so far-fetched to the point of fantasy. Ice_fyre, that's an interesting story! I wonder what Frank Herbert...

What is your fav Japanese anime/manga?

I still hold a special place in my heart for Rurouni Kenshin, Gensomaden Saiyuki and Fushigi Yuugi, though the latter was just because I liked Tasuki. I liked El Hazard, Cardcaptor Sakura, Gatekeepers and...I can't remember the rest for now :D

    Dune and science fiction

I liked the first three, though for me Dune Messiah was just a bridge of sorts for Children of Dune. I've read God Emperor and though it was quite good, I didn't like it as much as Dune. I haven't read the others yet, but personally I think the story began to spread itself too thin beyond God...

    Secret Story

...A Jllxvgbckll!!" The alien finished. J.D. was much perplexed. "Excuse me, can you repeat that?" he asked. The aliens shook their heads. "I'm afraid we cannot describe it, we have no words for it in your tongue!" they said. "It was the Jllxvgbckll's fault!" one of them said. "Because of it, we...

...he uttered a cry of surprise, jumping back as he observed a small alien colony residing in the sentient's crevice of a mouth. "How on earth is this possible?" J.d. said. "What? What do you see?" the creature asked anxiously. As he looked on, multitudes of tiny lights flickered to life...

Re: Trivia sorry am late, fellas. ill make this easy In the movie version of ROTK, Pippin was asked to sing a Shire-song for Denethor. In the book he didn't sing anything, and if he did it wasn't stated. What part of LOTR or which book, then, can you find the lyrics to the song Pippin sang in...
