    Archery questions

Would depend how much heavier and how different. They would struggle and accuracy and distance would be affected. They would probably have to practice with it and the likely-hood of them pulling off a good shot on their first attempt would be small. They would feel the strain along the muscles...

    Sex and sexuality

Yep, I agree. We don't see these things in the same light now due to birth control methods and modern medicines , but the possibility of deadly venereal disease and/or pregnancy would hamper a lot of behaviors in a fantasy world. How likely would most characters in a medieval-type world have...

    What makes a hooky start

I think your starts are good springs - you worry too much ;) What's the best beginning you've ever read? Why was it so good? I guess, try to analyse what made it so appealing and aim for that effect. Famous first paragraphs/first lines Of the narrative type: Dickens - with 'Best of...

    Plot help.

I agree with DZ - if the character was not useful, or potentially useful in the future, why wouldn't she have her killed? I suppose, though, another potential reason could be that the crime-boss knows this character has powerful protection and the crime-boss is under pressure or has been warned...

    Religion in your writing

I'm an atheist, but although I am not a believer, and think generally of all religions as on the same level as each other - ie the stories are kind of fun, but there's no greater merit in say for example Protestantism than in the stories of Zeus and Hera, I have included made-up (they all are...

How do you spot a One-Sided Character?

Transparent? Like Glitch said - everything on the surface and entirely predictable? There's a saying: 'no side to him/her'. Maybe this is the same thing. Someone who had 'no side' to them would be honest and straightforward - what you see is what you get. Someone very open, with no secrets, an...

    Forbidden Fruit

Neither - as I agree with the previous posts, ie: Forbiddingly is the wrong meaning and forbiddenly isn't a word. Also 'yet it felt so right' is trite imo. How about: What we were doing was forbidden and wrong. Yet it didn't feel so. or What we were doing was both forbidden and...

“Plot, a writer’s last resort, or a dullard’s first choice”

I definitely think you need to find what works for you. We're all different. I guess some of us here are planners, others not. I start with a general outline, a vague idea of where I'm headed. I don't write anything down and this gives me, I think, a flexibility. Planning is good in that...

I'll critique yours if you critique mine.

I will never have anything ready in time for this so I might as well say ok - I'll be a reviewer. PM me if interested in having your work shredded (joke obvs as I am always constructive in my critiques;))

How quickly does the fantasy need to be introduced?

I think I'd want a hint of something in the first chapters. It could be subtle, but a definite hint of something not of the real, mundane world. I read fantasy books for the fantasy. If, halfway in, there still was no sign of anything I might put the book down.

    What tropes annoy you?

Like Voldemort. He does not have a likeable bone in his body. How did he get his followers? Through fear alone? Come on! All of them, and I mean all, have a nicer time of it, and more power and influence under the normal regime. Following such an evil, charmless loon who regularly beats them...

    Bristol Con

Looks like it would be good, and only an hours drive for me, but don't think I can get any more time off. Have booked a holiday this month already. Maybe next year. :(

    What tropes annoy you?

None if they're done well. If they're done badly - then all of them I guess. But mainly it would be the grasshopper and wise-master scene.

    Confidence Issuses

Now that's true. I've read, or started to read and thrown down in disgust, a fair few extremely bad books. There's a confidence boost - these people got published. I started reading a book by Peter Robinson (crime thrillers) and thought it was ok - enjoyable - enough to make me pick up...

Creative Writing Courses - Helpful? Not helpful?

Ok - might do that :) That's sort of it. I want to try new things - not necessarily to write novels in a whole new style, but to improve generally.

    Multiple Projects

I have three WIPs on the go right now. When I get stalled on one I switch about. Work is going slowly but all three are progressing. It helps me, but I think this will be a personal thing, and there'll be some who can only commit to one thing at a time. I'd try it, and see what happens.

Creative Writing Courses - Helpful? Not helpful?

Yep - being a member of chrons is very helpful :) But on creative writing courses they give you assignments and things and I think this would make me try things I hadn't before. Expand my writing and so on. Thanks Prizzley - that does look good - and is well within my price range - I'll...

Creative Writing Courses - Helpful? Not helpful?

I could try. But the only thing I could afford would be an evening class type of course. I've heard of residential courses, weekend courses, and there is a Creative Writing MA at Cardiff University, but these are kind of out of my reach unless my situation changes drastically. I looked last...

Creative Writing Courses - Helpful? Not helpful?

I'm thinking about doing a creative writing course but the ones I've seen are ranging from expensive to being unaffordable (for me anyway) so I don't want to waste my money on something that I will a) hate b) won't help. Someone I know went on one and said it was full of retired women in...
