    Harry Potter sucks

I didn't mean that i was superior in any way! :) As I understand it Rowling wrote those books for children and imagined them reading them as they grew up - hence the books become more complex as they go on to fit with teenage years. I was trying to imply that if I had first read it when I was...

    Harry Potter sucks

I read the first HP but found it derivative, unoriginal and dull. So didn't bother with the rest. But then I wasn't 10 years old when I read it...

    Ursula Le Guin's best?

The Dispossed is the best I think - I recommend it to students as it is as good a description of Communism/Anarchy VS Capitalism as any I know.

    [Workshop] Engage me quickly!

His breathing was slow and taught as he stood behind the opened door. Fingers gripping the pistol, he knew he would only have one shot. Looking down at the dusty floorboards he saw the drawn out shadow of a figure approaching. The person stopped just inside the door and sighed. "I can hear you...

    Tips to help hinder writers-block.

Sometimes to get me going again I try to think of something very unexpected or even weird. I usually think about this when I am walking about or doing something else. I throw in the unexpected straight into where i have left off (e.g. an explosion, a new character, a death) and then that forces...

How to introduce viewpoint character's physical features.

All of the above are good ideas. I try to describe during an action, "His long fingers curled around the hand grip of the gun slowly as his grey eyes studied her deeply." Also for those of us starting out cliches are hard to avoid but are they necessarily a bad thing? Not all readers out there...

    Character Creation Chain

VINCENT TROPHY Vince was the kind of guy who knew black was black and white was white. Shoot first and don't bother asking questions. When it came to women he was old fashioned like a steam train. Girls were a means to get from A to B. The closest he ever came to love was when he serviced his...

    Should I draw a Map?

Also, try TIMELINES of events - sometimes these can be drawn on maps too. (VERY useful if your story involves time travel - overlapping maps and timelines) Can get a bit complicated though!
