Planet Nine news and a new dwarf planet, one of "thousands" ?

Well I hope all these people googling "The Goblin" causes Teresa Edgerton to get a few extra sales on a particular book of hers...

    Disenchantment

Some of the directorial style reminds me of other non-Groening shows like Pope Town, but once I got into it, I stopped noticing that so much. I enjoyed the show, and found some of the quirky dad jokes which were a little slapstick saved the laughs, which was needed at times due to the serial...

    Sci-fi actually needs science

That is because we realise that magic, if sufficiently advanced, is indistinguishable from science... Oh wait, I think I messed up that quote...

Top 10 complaints from a Creative Writing teacher

The memoir thing always bugs me. I mean, you find over privileged kids with a dull as dishwater ordinary upbringing want to write their memoir, and can't understand why nobody would ever want to read it. If you are teaching a course and all your students are like that, well, you'd go postal...

    What's the game now?

That game was fading already when the book was published. The demise of genre periodicals was killing it long before ebooks became a thing. Of course, genre periodicals have never really died, but they are nowhere near what once they were, and you just have more authors fighting for a smaller...

    Altered Carbon (Netflix)

lol Canned laughter is always pretty bad... On an aside, I dragged my old recording cans out of retirement which I haven't used in years, and it's fine and dandy through those. Go figure. I wouldn't call myself old, but perhaps I haven't been always so kind to my ears lol. The tinitus does get...

    Altered Carbon (Netflix)

Yeah, that was my experience. There is a craze among sound engineers lately to cut the treble down and all but obliterate the mid levels because it makes it seem "edgy". In actual fact it is a lazy arse way to fail to give atmosphere, and renders everything unwatchable. It does vibrate your gut...

Am I the only one who finds the sound mixing on this show unbearable?

What are you working on right now?

Pulling the sequel to my third novel out of the draw at last. I started it not long after finishing the third novel, which remains one of my most popular works, but put it down after a few chapters. Seven more books on I still haven't written it. Now is the time - as I need to give the readers...

    Contractions - Yea or Nay?

Within dialog, of course they are used, unless your character is somebody more inclined to not use them. Outside of it, I try to avoid them, but if the flow is clunky and awkward, then you have to assess if a contraction fixes it, or is there a better way to express the passage without using it...

    Minimalist world-building

I think we have to consider minimalist world building to be still world building. If you have no world building, you don't have minimilist world building, you have nothing in that corner. I think of it as a paint by numbers world building. The reader colours in the minimalist framework you have...

Interactive maps - are they worthwhile?

Has anybody else here tinkered with the idea of an interactive map on your website to give readers a fun way of exploring the world of your books? Do you think they are worth the effort? I have a basic one on my fantasy series site Interactive Map of Cinder – The Cinder Chronicles Do you have...

    Microsoft Office/LibreOffice

Just to answer a question, I have always had track changes work fine when I open in libre. But I also dislike them immensely, because I am a bit old fashioned and find a hard copy bleeding red ink to be much better.

Reviews: How to get your readers to actually leave them?

It can take some time to reach that century - especially if you are a bit more reserved with your posting habits. So congratulations, Steve Harrison!

Reviews: How to get your readers to actually leave them?

I tend not to talk unless I have something meaningful to say, and then I have the entire "do I need to censor myself so I don't upset some would be reader?" Of course, I don't ask for reviews and I don't market, so the organic reputation of forum posts and social media is pretty much all that is...
