What *I* would have done differently?

Jump 10 years into the war as rumoured, no more writing yourself into a corner trying to create a starting point but feeling the need for the cheap shock of killing characters.

    Grimdark

Mark Lawrence is a completely different beast to the others. Much like Daily Mail columnists compared to historical events, so much grimdark is mystery from a modern perspective. The characters may as well complain about the lack of Amazon prime.

    YA recommendations for the uninitiated

Charlie Higson's The Enemy series. Traditional disaster wipes out everyone over 14(?) To the day, with the dead becoming zombies. Very well written, despite the geography based on tube maps - Tower of London to St Paul's is hopping distance.

What was the last movie you saw?

Baby Driver. Dragged a bit at the end, and the music was a bit predictable, but over all a lot of fun.

    Thought provoking meme

I spend my days as an international VAT/Import accountant for a Japanese multinational. I'm not sure how, why, or what I did wrong in a previous life. But writing doesn't come anywhere to the level of paralyzing self doubt of my day job.

How to render air travel obsolete?

Atmospheric contamination. Knocks 20 years of your life, a human wouldn't notice post apocalypse, but an engine?

World's first cash point. Fifty years ago today

And yet you still get stuck behind someone who has obviously never seen one before and is convinced pressing the wrong button will start WW3.

Medieval villagers mutilated the dead to stop them rising?

It's Yorkshire, if the zombie apocalypse was going to start anywhere it would be Yorkshire. If only so the undead would attack Bradford and decide humanity had suffered enough.

    Post Apocalyptic

Post apocalyptic is my favourite genre. Either from a well written analysis of how humanity would develop afterwards, all the way through to terrible self published author insert zombie fiction. Though for different reasons.

    heavy military devision name?

Sigh. Yes, that is exactly what I said. If only I had actually typed that.

    heavy military devision name?

Roman rip-off that never almost never has Centurions or Optio's. I've always preferred the Soviet Shock or Assault labels for heavy divisions/armies.

Fox talks about what it would need to reboot Firefly

It would never live up to the expectations of the die hard fans, who in the echo chamber of the internet have turned Firefly into the greatest show ever. And so unless it met these expectations the bile would be truly stunning. I'm not sure the vast majority of potential viewers would care and...

How come the ”light side” ever has a chance?

The Younglings who get sent out with Jedi commanders because cartoons need a wisecracking kid in them, beyond being trained in combat as pretty much as soon as they join the temple.

    Protagonist development: Transformation or revelation?

The hero has always been capable, beyond actually needing a skill/knowledge, they simply need the motivation to act. Why die to defend the Hamsters of cuteness when all harmsters are always gits, until the Chinchilla you love suffers eternal damnation on behalf of a hamster convict. Do you...

The best mediaeval weapons for women

That is a big turn off for me in modern fantasy. Everyone simply knows that they have terrible lives that the situation is wrong and that things should be better, but from a 21st Century perspective. Social and economic injustice through a corrupt patriachal society that can be overcome by a...

How come the ”light side” ever has a chance?

Smart-arse answer - The Light Side has heavily indoctrinated child soldiers. Whilst good and bad tend to be relative the side with child soliders, sorry younglings, is rarely on the side of angels. My knowledge is probably seriously out of date, but there is a difference between Sith and...

    Capaldi leaving Dr Who

The BBC do seem to be really wierd about success. It's not enough to make a critically acclaimed show that gets good viewing figures, it almost has to be one or the other. High viewing figures are good but it means the plebs are watching it rather than a more cultured audiance. Critically...

    Capaldi leaving Dr Who

Can't say I blame him. It seems one of those series that reserve a lot of time and require his availability, making it difficult to work around and do other projects, without actually requiring his presence. There there has been the...quality of certain episodes.

Would you read a fantasy novel that verged into scifi, or vice versa?

I quite like a bit of (distant) post apocalypse in my fantasy, lost hi-tech soyou're never sure where the border with magic might lie. Much like Mark Lawrences work.

    What does Fantasy need?

I'd like to see books written as historical fiction with some fantasy elements, by and large fantasy comes across as very modern mindsets with fantasy elements - The general unpleasantness of life in different time periods never comes across that well, the casual violence, existing in a barely...
