The Best Classic Doctor Who Story.

The Green Death. If you fail to appreciate the true significance of this story think about this: there was a time when all buses were green; people painted their front doors green, painted their bathrooms green, brought the neighbours around to show off their lime green living rooms with green...

What was the last movie you saw?

Just re-viewed The Green Mile for the tenth time, although it's been more than a year since I last saw it. Damn, I still think it's the best film I've ever seen...

I'll never get it that big again.

OMG! Design the next USS ENTERPRISE (Offical Contest)

Surely the only logical place a warp core can go is between the nacelles? It requires some major engineering to move the antimatter from one into the warp core where it can be combined with matter, so the placement of the nacelles and core are such as to trade-off the proximity of the nacelles...

    Writing software.

I was intrigued enough by this thread to download yWriter and try it for myself. I work entirely in Linux, and I'm afraid to say that in this environment yWriter is entirely broken software. A pity because I can really see the potential. But there is no way I'm trusting my hard-won words to...

    Writing software.

The power of the layout engine that you get for free with any web browser these days should not be overlooked. Speaking for myself, I write in Emacs Org mode (Google!) and view in the same web-browser I use to view Chronicles... the big advantage is that you can see how the words end up in any...

    Ian Who...?

Congratulations on all your successes mate. I always think of small presses as SF micro-breweries; can't wait to sample the coming concoctions! [[Dammit, why do I always get the page-turn??]]

    Aeon Flux (2005)

Have to admit I've had this DVD a couple of years, but was so put off by the first viewing that I vowed never to watch it again. However, I just did after seeing this thread, and, to be honest, it's not as bad as I remember. I appreciate the artiness of it better now, but boy, is the action...

Will there ever be a new series?

I'd like to see a sequence exploring the period when the Federation was properly at war with the Klingons, with proper action-adventure heroics and less pussy-footing than the other series. Get rid of the ----ing android and let the plots be driven by gritty characters with limited technology...

    Road to Perdition (2002)

I'm with Dave on this -- I enjoyed it but didn't rate it that highly. It is actually a long time since I saw it (I've got it on DVD somewhere), but my abiding memory is that everybody shoots everybody else and it is just a bit silly. I also thought Tom Hanks was out of place, and his...

    Laptop problems.....again.....

If the laptop is quite old (two years or more?) don't rule out the possibility that the battery is finished. Personally I manage without a battery in mine, but I think third-party substitute makes are fairly cheap and as good as originals.

    Cover art for debut novel

Fantastic image, and designed so well to be wrapped around the boards of a book. Many, many congratulations on the novel, and good luck with the sales. ;)

    Does free will exist?

They didn't give me a choice....

    Does free will exist?

I believe the answer is yes. Free will for me is the ability to make a decision which flies in the face of all local influences. Most of the time we follow rules, because we know a more successful outcome is more likely if we follow the rules. But sometimes we just don't. It doesn't matter...

How is Microsoft Word 2003 being this clever?

I wouldn't mind betting it's just a simple hard-coded find and replace '*in g' -> '*ing '. MicroSoft will have done their homework, found the one hundred most common mistakes, and written code specifically for them.

Rama series by Arthur C Clarke

Yeah, I guess you're right. The remark does come at the end though, and leaves an impression.

Rama series by Arthur C Clarke

Not really sure I like that essay, Anthony. I think it is bad form to draw parallels between books and films. The last thing I want is to read screenplays. Your mileage obviously differs to mine, and it takes me about twenty sittings and two weeks to read a 200 page novel, for various reasons...

Rama series by Arthur C Clarke

On the whole I don't have much problem with the whole series; each installment expanding on the previous one and introducing new mysteries (except the last, of course). The only quibble I have is why did the sequels have to be so much bigger than the original? If they had kept the same basic...
