    Some fantasy recs please...

I'd check out Robin Hobb, she's not especially dark, and has great characters and pretty interesting, atypical plots.

    The Writing Process Bores...

For me, it's a fine line between planning enough to be interested, and dedicated to seeing the story through, with enough leeway to go off on tangents, that may well become serious plot points if I like them enough. It's like a strange tightrope. You just have to remember to not fill in all the...

Private, keep-in-your folder pages of details and worldbuilding.

yeah, I do way too much of it, and not enough actual writing. But I'm working on a game project for an elder-scrolls style open-world rpg, and having a crapload of world building is lending itself pretty well to the project - every random detail of my world building is actually being put to use...

    Is writing dangerous?

Nice, I can relate to that. Concerning the OP - yes, in many ways, but mostly for my sanity. Also attatchment to your writing [or anything] I have found can be dangerous - I think you shouldn't get too attatched [thinking about it this may be related to the sanity thing : P]. edit - also...

    Gardens of the Moon frustration

I've recently finished Dead House Gates, and seem to have formed somewhat of a love hate relationship with the books thus far. I am equal parts amazed and frustrated. Frustrated that I am missing things that perhaps other more keen minds aren't (****, I have to actually try to glean some sort of...

    No Moon

So I presume the forces governing your fantasy universe are the same as ours (or else the planet is actually in our universe)? Seems you're almost going into a hard sci-fi level of scientific backing up (not that that is a bad thing at all of course) for what is apparently a fantasy based...

    a dramatis personae without spoilers

hey thanks very much for the speedy reply! That looks to be exactly what I'm after. Cheers!

    a dramatis personae without spoilers

I'm about a third of the way through game of thrones, and am having some trouble remembering all the names, and who everyone is. Every list of characters I've found on the net so far is riddled with spoilers - I was just wondering if anyone knew of a similar list that doesn't contain any...

    World-building

I am a massive world builder. In fact, it is practically all I do. I love developing the mythological and religious elements that underpin the whole work - I find this probably more enjoyable than working with characters. I have oodles upon oodles of maps, diagrams explaining crazy metaphysical...

    On Creating Imaginary Worlds: Fantasy

What sort of calendar might arise from a civilization developing under a sky with six massive, distinctive moons? I have envisioned a system where the passing of time is perhaps marked by certain reoccurring moon-alignments, but I am having some trouble figuring out how this might work...

How to make Martial Arts Credible in Fantasy Setting?

In my WIP I have a particular group that utilize martial arts style combat, and I found the most important thing in getting that to work in the setting, was creating a historical reason for its existence in the first place. So I developed a sub-sect of a somewhat eastern-influenced religion...

Yeah please do keep me informed, would be fun to meet up with other folk that love doing this stuff.

Are we living in a 'Golden Age'?

I would like to think Erikson would be remembered very well in years to come, but then I do get the impression he is nowhere near as acclaimed as, say, Martin (who I have yet to read, but is on my list right after I finish the Malazan books). I get the feeling Erikson may be on to something...

    Other Worlds 2.

Sounds like it was quite good then! Also - there is a Nottingham fantasy writers group?? Have any contact details or anything? Lastly, how old are you, if you don't mind me asking, and what was the general age of the people that were there? I'm 24 myself.

    Other Worlds 2.

aw crap, I would have really liked to go to this but have only just heard about it now. Was it any good?

    Greg Bear "Eon"

Blood Music is one of those books I started reading, and really liked, yet never finished for some unknown reason. Will have to dig it out at some point. Also, welcome antiloquax! This is a cool place, and has gradually become one of my go-to forums.

    The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim!

the point is there are lots of cool things to explore and find everywhere you look. If you don't like that exploration element, you might as well play a linear game where you can't veer off from the stories intended path.

    Book organization

I have a coffee table in my computer room stacked with books. Absolutely no order what so ever, and I don't know where anything is. Don't have that many though, so it's manageable at the moment.

    A few plots I'm considering

Surely if the idea is crap, it doesn't matter how amazing the execution is? I'm only ever inspired to write if I think I have a good idea, otherwise I don't see the point. That is the sole motivation for me. Am I doing it wrong?
