Blood Music is one of those books I started reading, and really liked, yet never finished for some unknown reason. Will have to dig it out at some point. Also, welcome antiloquax! This is a cool place, and has gradually become one of my go-to forums.

the point is there are lots of cool things to explore and find everywhere you look. If you don't like that exploration element, you might as well play a linear game where you can't veer off from the stories intended path.

I have a coffee table in my computer room stacked with books. Absolutely no order what so ever, and I don't know where anything is. Don't have that many though, so it's manageable at the moment.
