Honor Harrington - whats the big deal?

I will add to the chorus: The second book IS better. I also dislike the huge chucks in technical data. But this is an adventure series---I know I'm not going to get a Hugo winner here. I have read the first three and have enjoyed it as a fairly good adventure story. There are many other...

    Star Trek: Into Darkness (2013)

There were indeed a lot of plot holes. The Enterprise is "hiding" under water? I mean the people they were trying to save from the volcano were very primitive---so why not just "hide" by staying in orbit and beaming down as usual? Transporters broken down again?

    Harlan Ellison, thoughts?

I have read much of Harlan Ellison's work---he is so prolific very few have read all of his work. His stories often aim for an emotional effect---so they are often hit or miss with me. He has always remided me of the girl with the curl in the middle of her forehead..."and when she was good...

    Anne McCaffrey, 1926-2011

Sad news. Another great Sf wirter has left us. But, she has also left us her works, to enjoyed for many future generations.

Newbie: which doctor should I start watching with?

The show was originally intended as a childrens adventure show. This is quite obvious in the production values of the Hartnell and Troughton seasons. I personally would start with Spearhead from Space, the first adventure of the Third Doctor, Jon Pertwee. Then Tom Baker. You can go back...

Elisabeth Sladen 1/2/1948 - 19/4/2011 (Sarah Jane Smith)

I met Elizabeth Sladen at a Dr. Who Convention. She was a wonderful person, freindly and pleasant to all than fans crowding around. Aslo, a superb actress. Very sad news. RIP, Elizabeth.

    Kindle

Joining the discussion late as usual, right now I have no plans to buy an e-reader. I agree with J-Sun--I am keeping my paperbooks! 1) No initial expense to buy an -ereader 2)No worry about battery life; downloading time and so on. 3)No worry about formats. Our local library system...

Nicholas Courtney (1929-2011) Brigadier Alastair Lethbridge-Stewart

An excellent supporting actor. He will be missed.

    The X-Men (1963)

I read the original X-men from issue #1 on. (Too bad I did not keep them, right?) I read Marvel almost esclusively from 1965 to about 1971. I enjoyed the X-men----but I stopped reading comics regularly when the story arcs became so long and confusing.

Anyone here read any Spider Robinson?

My favorite Spider Robinson book is "Callahan's Cross time Saloon". I have also read "Telempath" and "Night of Power". "Telempath is definitely the stronger of those two books. A books of short stories--Time Travelers Strictly Cash--is well worth looking for as well.

    Huck Finn changes

One word or two is one thing. But the precedent of censorship is scary. Start editing any word out of any book that might offend anyone, and we will soon have nothing left.

Scientists choose favourite 'lost' SF novels

I have read only two. "Dark Universe" I read as a teen and did not find it too interesting--as an adult I might enjoy a re-read . "Earth Abides" was a good end of the world novel and I have always liked it. A bit dated, but a lot of good writing overall.

    Jeffery Deaver

I have read several Jeffrey Deaver books. He is always good for a few unexpected twists, and his information about police proceedures is beleivable and up to date. Try "A Maiden's Grave"--it is the first book of his I have read.

    Patricia Neal died yesterday

LOng time Sf fans will remember Patricia Neal playing opposite MIchael Rennie in the 1951 version of "The Day the Earth Stood Still". She had several other memorable roles, but this was, as far as I know, her only major SF role. Imho, she and Michael Rennie really were great in their scenes...

    Kevin J Anderson

KJA is light reading---quick, simple pleasant SF to read when you are not in the mood to ready something world-shaking. I read a few and found them okay. Give the book a try. Many people dislike but many people also like him.

    1980's series

Gabriel: In the Time of the Dark, there are two main characters transported to the land of Darwaith--one femle and one male. And the prince is a baby in the first book. I can't recall the names; but there are several main characters; Hambly alternates chapters between the male and female...

    1980's series

Barbara Hambly. The three original titles are: 1) The Time of the Dark 2)The Walls of air and 3) The Armies of Daylight. (Originallly a trilogy for many years, she later did two more books. Great fantasy.

Do you keep all of your novels?

After 15 years, I had to moved to a muc smaller apartment--money and all that. I had to cut down my books. I actually did so in a unusual way. The ones I got rid of were the ones I feel would be easiest to replace. Since I regularly visit the used book stores in town, I know what they get...

Fan wish list for possible episodes...

    1) I would really like to see Paul McCann in an epsode somehow. He often gets neglected because he only did the one movie. I feel he had great potential, though the movie did lack something. Had he had at least one full season as Chris Eccleston did, he might be better known. 2)I really...

The Death of Science Fiction (Yet Again).

I'm with J. D. I've been hearing about the death of science fiction since I started reading Sf forty years ago. Sure, the bookstores have a lot of junk mixed in with the good sf--but that applies to all genres the bookstores stock. I read mysteries occasionally and some of them are really...
