Fantasy, Families waging a secret war against one another. Family names Sun, Heart, Moon and others

Read this maybe 10 years ago. Was standalone novel I think. Set in the modern world. Families with varying wealth and resources. Battling each other. Have been for centuries (eons maybe). Members of families have abilities to manipulate the world around them and manipulate people. Central...

Not familiar with that Title, not sure I've read anything by Sanderson. Will have to look it up :)

    Queen of Storms

Hava? Definitely more rounded out as a character. At least Feist hasn't gotten as repetitive as Edding's did.

Why doesn't sci fi have the mass appeal that fantasy has?

I think the crux of it may be that consumers of fantasy accept a complete suspension of reality (magic, mystical creatures etc) whereas Scifi in many respects is a hyper-extension of our current reality, and many aspects of evolutionary rather than revolutionary. Often the consumer is caught out...

    Queen of Storms

Yes! I really enjoyed his Mistress of the Empire collaboration with Janny Wurts, and Miranda later in the Riftwar saga.

    Nightbreed by Clive Barker

The origin story of the inhabitants of Mydian has always intrigued me. I wish both the book and movie delved into this more - essentially every fantastical creature, vampire, werewolf, dryad, siren, harpy and all others come from the same gene pool of other than human creatures, who after many...

    Queen of Storms

@ Nixie, what did you think of 'Queen of Storms' - I liked it, but it seemed short. Agree with your assessment of King of Ashes - not ground breaking, so of the usual tropes - but entertaining without asking too much of the reader. Hoping the third isn't too far away.

After it all, all the blood, sweat & tears as martinis go, I'd had better.

    Architecture of Midkemia

There are a number of maps online showing the geographical layout of Midkemia some very detailed. What I'd like to find is some Midkemian architecture, particularly Pugs villa on Isla Beata. The layout and structure are mentioned in varying levels of detail throughout the series to date (if...

    Small Creatures with Short Lives

Sounds a bit like Mote in Gods Eye, up until the end of the question at least.

    Final lines....

The ethereal forms of my family gathering around me I asked "Is this heaven?". With widening smiles, eyes full of longing gleam, in unison they all said "No" and began to feed.

    Final lines....

Sifting through the fading fragments of his life, decisions made and roads travelled Ten kepting returning again and again to the smiling green eyes of Jade. His final thought, a realisation that the gleam in her eye wasn't the seductive twinkle he longed to see but the reflection of a steely blade.

    Pug's parents

With much made of various characters' lineage and heritage throughout the various midkemia related series I find it odd that not much has been made of Pug's parentage, or maybe I've missed something along the way. Anyone have any ideas on how Pug came to be a magician of the greater path...

    Motivations for evil

I've always liked the adage "the road to hell is paved with good intentions". Power corrupts, ultimate power corrupts ultimately". "Ultimately" being a reference to both time elapsed and magnitude. What may start out as combat against perceived injustice may turn, in time, with difficult morally...

A short story. Very, very short.

I liked the twist, even if a little telegraphed. Anything that gets a dark chuckle is got to be good. Almost a pity to be so specific the thing being preserved that the subject modelled her methods on.. Musings on the kill first / not to kill first effect on taste could have added a second...

Well, The first paragraph of your description sounds like 'Transit' by Edmund Cooper. If it is the one you're after I wasn't aware of a second book...
