Who Do You Think is Greater, Robert A Heinlein or Poul Anderson ?

You never read "The Day After Tomorrow", where Americans develop a death ray which kills only the invading Pan Asians. You never read the anti taxation/big government rants by Heinlein in "Glory Road"?

Who Do You Think is Greater, Robert A Heinlein or Poul Anderson ?

What a question! I have very fond memories of reading Anderson, thinking of Three Hearts and Three Lions, The Dancer from Atlantis and Shield in particular. Possibly not a great author though. On the other hand, Heinlein's work had greater scope but his prose style not so much. Also his work...

Richard Adams and Animals in SFF Novels

I thought "Sirius" by Olaf Stapleton was a very good novel when I read it in the 1970's. The eponymous protagonist is a super intelligent dog.

    Classic fantasy?

Theodore Sturgeon was an author whose works included horror, straight SF and Fantasy. I had copies of 'The Dreaming Jewels' and 'E Pluribus Unicorn'. The latter's original cost was 2/6- (two shillings and sixpence) but this eventually literally fell apart. I also once read The Dreaming Jewels...

What are Favorite Parallel Universe Books and Stories ?

My favourites in straight SF would be Worlds of the Imperium and The Other Side of Time by Keith Laumer. More on the fantasy side the Witchworld books by Andre Norton and the L Sprague de Camp books starting with the Incompleat Enchanter spring to mind.

Can You Remember Your First Science Fiction Novel?

Blast Off at Woomera I think by Hugh Walters, maybe in 1969 or so.

    Poul Anderson

I read 'Shield' as a teenager and remember it as a fine novel. It involved a person on contemporary earth finding an alien? artifact which was a personal force-field generator as I recall. I still think 'Three Hearts and Three Lions' is a better read than 'The Broken Sword' if you like stuff...

    Zelazny Quotes

I think that's from 'Doorways in the Sand', where the protagonist is rescued by agents disguised as a wombat and a 'roo. I'm not sure where this is from. I think it's the first line of one of his novels; "Can you smell me Dead?"

    'Lord of Light' review

When I was a teenager Lord of Light was very highly rated (winning the Hugo and Nebula awards) and I did enjoy it, and I remain a fan of Zelazny. However, I think the 'Creatures of Light and Darkness', which covers similar ground but with gods of the Egyptian pantheon is a more mature, rounded...

Are there any movies that should be remade?

Oh my god TK, you like the same films as me! (it's time to worry) There's hope though if you wouldn't like to see Aliens remade but with only the crappy backdrop effect on the unstable platform near the end (where Ripley thinks Bishop has buggered of and stranded her).

    Hawkwind Documentary on BBC

I went to see Hawkwind in '73 on the same tour that Pyan did. I was into Michael Moorcock at the time but although I was aware of it at the time that didn't influence why I went, which was because at the time gigs were cheap and people used to go and see most of the bands on the circuit unless...

    Thomas M Disch

Sorry to hear about his death. I read 'Camp Concentration' aeons ago but my favourite was 'Echo Round his Bones', which was based on a fantastic idea spun off from matter transmission, which was then developed into a very good plot which worked on a literal planetary scale. Recommended...

The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (2005)

Re: Prince Caspian (2008) Did anyone else notice the scene with the giant sitting under the tree (set up like the original illustration from the book) Nice touch!

    A.E. van Vogt

Ditto, FE. 'Moonbeast' was the most escapist and personal tale of all the Van Vogt novels I have read, and probably my favourite. I read 'Darkness of Diamondia' and recall this as a bit dire so I wouldn't bother with that one.

The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (2005)

Re: Prince Caspian (2008) I went to see 'Prince Caspian' over the weekend, having really looked forward to it. I was a little disappointed, mostly by the last 20 minutes as they just changed too much for someone raised on the books, and they made the battles too big (my Narnia is just like the...

    Poul Anderson

I'm not sure that I know what you mean by passionate in relation to The Broken Sword, but I guess that my taste just runs to stuff a bit lighter (I like fantasy like The Dragon and the George and A Spell for Chameleon with a bit of humour and romance in it. But 'Chacun a son gout' as they say.
