Yes, that is true - however, there was fire involved and I can see where a fuzzy memory would mix that up.

The first part definitely sounds like 'Dragon Prince' by Melanie Rawn. I don't remember the sequel books as well as Dragon Prince itself, but the second part does sound like it comes from the same series.

Michael Moorcock's Elric novels. I gobbled up the first of his books that I read - The Eternal Champion, and went on to enjoy Phoenix in Obsidian and The Dragon in the Sword, but for some reason I can't seem to get into anything else of his that I've tried. I'd like to try again, though.

Couldn't get through the first book - I think I was really turned off by the length of Wheel of Time (got to book 9 of that series and gave up), so when I found Wizard's First Rule to be completely uninteresting, I just stopped right there.

Are they not releasing these covers anymore? I have only the first three novels, and they're in this format, but I've only seen the newer format in stores now.

Personally, I'd go for Martin first, simply because WoT starts out fine but starts to get a little... not so great. It really fizzles out around book 7-ish.
