It's November. What are you reading?

Finished Voyage of the Sable Keech by Neal Asher, pretty solid but not enough sci-fi in a sci-fi book (pet peeve of mine lately, see PFH). Now onto City of Stairs by Robert Jackson Bennett. Heard good things about it, hoping they prove true.

It's November. What are you reading?

Wow, I loved that book! Although second read of your comment - you enjoyed it but thought it was badly written?

It's October. What are you reading?

I put down The Chimera Vector by Nathan M. Farrugia after 50 or so pages, hate to say it but the writing was was too amateurish. Instead I picked up Terms of Enlistment by Marko Kloos which I really enjoyed - you could tell it was heavily influenced by Scalzi and events like Black Hawk Down in...

    The Books You've Never Finished...

Another vote for Jonathan Strange, really couldn't get into it. Also like the above posters as I have got older I am much more inclined to put down a book if its not doing it for me, I have done it 3 times in the last 3 months now...

It's October. What are you reading?

Well yes that is true! By the way - just wondering... are you a feminist that fights nerds, or a nerd feminist that fights others? :)

It's October. What are you reading?

Finished Lev Grossman's The Magicians - not bad, even if the main dude was seriously getting on my nerves for being for bloody depressed and mopey all the time. Now onto The Chimera Vector by Nathan M. Farrugia.

It's September. What are you reading?

Well, I couldn't finish the third in Kate Locke's Immortal Empire series. I got sick of the author projecting too much of her (RL) personal life wishlist onto the character - if I hear another snippet of how great and understanding her werewolf boyfriend is... anyway, on recommendation (I...

What are you reading in August?

Thanks for the heads up, I'll put on my TBR list!

What are you reading in August?

Finished the excellent Ready Player One by Ernest Cline, great fun read with extra bonus points if you grew up in the 80's. Now I am ploughing through Kate Locke's Immortal Empire series, finished God Save the Queen and The Queen is Dead, currently readying Long Live the Queen. Again a fun...

What are you reading in August?

Finished a very disappointing The Shadow Throne, the second in the series by Django Wexler. I loved the first but this, well very disappointing - such a downstep from his first book. I found the main plot to be utterly unbelievable, with plot holes and a setting with numbers that just didn't...

What are you reading in August?

Yeah I have the same problem, before Erikson's last came out I thought it would be a good idea to re-read the whole of the Malazan series, no small feat! Needless to say I started struggling at about book 9, great as they are you can have too much of a (single type of good thing) in one go...

What are you reading in August?

Struggling through The Shadow Throne by Django Wexler, I know this middle novel of the trilogy is heavily inspired by the French Revolution but for me its not a patch on The Thousand Names. Its got to a point now where I am considering ditching it, which is a real shame as I loved the first and...

    Keeping Track Of Books

Goodsreads for me also, but I also use Calibre (for my kindle). Its very easy to add a column into the standard format saying "Read: Yes / No."

What Are You Reading In July?

Finished Tower Lord by Anthony Ryan -a good follow up to the excellent Blood Song. I did have two gripes though, the ending was far too rushed - its a big(ish) book, but it should have been another 50-100 pages easy to do justice to the rest of the book. Second - and its my fault, I felt I...

What Are You Reading In July?

I bought my signed copy of Half a King online at Waterstones, for the princely sum of £10! in fact... Half A King - Signed Edition (Book) by Joe Abercrombie (2014): Waterstones.com

What Are You Reading In July?

Well I have finished the excellent Price of Fools (Mark Lawrence) and am now reading Tower Lord by Anthony Ryan. I love Ryan's work, another automatic hardback buy for me. Simultaneously (well not quite) finished the latest Dresden audiobook, and have started on The Heroes by Abecrombie. I...

    ereader covers

I find a Kindle (or other generic e-reader) great for when im shaving - prop it on the bed pillows, lay down in front and have a lazy shave. Books are a pain for this as you have to prop the pages open with something, making turning the pages a bit of a bugger too.

    ereader covers

Unfortunately I have the official boring black one, for which I paid the ransom of about £35 back in the day! Nice to see you have an original Kindle like mine, i'm half hoping it breaks so I can justify getting another, but its been pretty bulletproof so far :/

What are your top 5 fantasy series?

I can see what you mean but the same can be said about the Malazan series - many people are put off by the first book but it is (IMO) one of the best fantasy series ever written. It may just need some context, after all when I read Brian's comment it interested me and after a little...

What Are You Reading In July?

I don't know, I tried the Alex Verus and really wanted to like it, being a Brit and all that but... I didn't find that if compared favourably to Dresden at all. I'm not even sure I finished the first book, that my attention may have wandered. Anyhoo wonderful July is upon us and a trio of my...
