    November 2022 Reading Thread

Really enjoyed The Postman Always Rings Twice (James M. Cain, 1934), its dated not surprisingly but its also an entertaining read and I wish more authors tried to tell their stories in 116 pages. I'm tempted to stick with a winning formula with crime but instead I'll take another swing at...

    Book Hauls!

And just one more :) This was an online haul. I was in Brisbane (Australia) a few weeks back, first time and so I visited as many second hand bookstores as I could which was still only a few but it included a couple of big and specialty ones. I was hoping to come away with a real haul and...

    November 2022 Reading Thread

Replay by Ken Grimwood (1986), I was a bit hesitant to read another time travel story so soon after Time and Again by Jack Finney (1970) and I did put it aside at first but I picked it back up again a few weeks later and its a good story built around a Groundhog Day style of time travel. I'm...

What was the last movie you saw?

    October 2022 Reading Thread

I enjoyed Time and Again by Jack Finney its not action packed but its a pleasant read and it was interesting to learn a little about the Dakota building and 1880s New York. SF Masterworks -> Crime Masterworks -> Fantasy Masterworks worked out pretty well and so I think I'll try another loop...

    October 2022 Reading Thread

Just before these two I also read PK Dick's The Penultimate Truth and similar to a lot of his work the biggest problem is its been done so many times since it was released in 1964. If you've played a Fallout game you know the story, whatever you think of his writing style there is no denying...

    October 2022 Reading Thread

Recently finished The Maltese Falcon by Dashiell Hammett (1930), obviously know of the movie but I don't think I've watched it all the way through and certainly not recently and so the story line aside from the statue itself was largely a mystery and I think I'll enjoy adding some crime stories...

    Stephen King's books, ranked.

Lots I haven't read but my list would have Dreamcatcher higher to start with. It is not a great novel but maybe mid-tier in a list like this and it does have its moments. It was an easy read that I enjoyed enough to finish in short order. Is Under the Dome really that good? I could see me...

Places in Fantasy and Science Fiction Films, Television and Games That You Wish Were Real

It has the advantage of being the first location that you visit after the tutorial and so it is designed to be welcoming but it is still Riverwood from Skyrim. Funnily enough I think I'd get bored after being there for a few days but after so many years revisiting and restarting what a place to...

What was the last movie you saw?

Robocop 2 is currently on TV and its one of my guilty pleasures. Lacks the social commentary of the original (although not completely) but I just love all the stop motion animation and it also includes some very early CGI that works well because they kept it so limited. Movie scared the hell...

    August 2022 Reading Thread

The Getaway by Jim Thompson, the first of the Crime Masterworks series that I picked up recently. A good read but there is a surreal twist towards the end which is interesting but having come from a long history of sci-fi and fantasy it was strangely a dip back into a familiar genre that I...

    Book Hauls!

Ok so no one is going to be excited about this but me but I am still going to post it like it is a big thing . Today there was a key in my PO Box and that key opened a post locker which held a well wrapped package (no mail to the house up here). It was a copy of The Space Merchants by...

    Book Hauls!

Thanks for the recommendations and I'll definitely check them out. Funny thing is I've all these wonderful paperbacks arriving and I'm currently stuck on Snowfall as an ebook. I really need to either get it finished or put it aside for now and start something new. I'm tempted to start with...

    Book Hauls!

Ok I am almost done monopolising this thread for a bit, there should be one final Fantasy Masterworks book to come and that will bring the total of my late night haul to 24 books split between the SF, Fantasy and Crime Masterworks plus one ratty old copy of Man Plus . Today it's, Time and the...

    Books that Scared you?

Not a book but I remember as a kid lying on a trampoline in the back yard, at night and staring at the stars while listening to Jeff Wayne's War of the Worlds on a walkman.
