Couldn't agree more - very much enjoyed the movie, couldn't, in fact, finish the book. I seem to remember Crichton's intro where he said(I believe) that it was one of his earliest, and that he was now publishing it because he could -- not in so many words, but that seemed to be the point...

It was pretty stinky at that - I liked Guns of Navarone, Force ten from Navarone, and although it's not so much a War Movie as a movie from the War, my all time favourite, Casablanca

I don't think I continued with the series, though I remember the first one well and it was fantastic.Burton was a great character.

I'm not just saying this to round out the discussion -- Moon is a Harsh Mistress is my favourite. The whole revolutionary plot and the AI helping them were very memorable, and Heinlein played with his line/clan marriage ideas without being as mmmm weird? about it as he was in some other books.

Re: wild cards? I think they got as far as 10 or so, then put out another distinct trilogy, and I believe Melinda snodgrass did a novel as well. It's a bit murky now, with the rerelease of the old series, but as long as you read the first one first, you can get away with reading them in any...
