Deepest History in a Fantasy series???

Ill once again agree with this... recently been a "GRRM is God" man but nowly converted to Erikson. However, ASoFaI is another good example of richly developed world history IMHO. I was almost willing to say Tad Williams can do a decent job but when put in perspective of Tolkien and Erikson I...

Post Your Syllabus For Modern Fantasy

Good idea this thread and apologize if I misinterpretted the timeline. I like the idea of reading different ideas on syllabi (I hope I got that word right) as it gives me reading ideas.

can anyone help out an erikson fan?

Actually I havent read any of the above and I consider myself fairly well read including ALL of Hobbs books and Williams and I coud go on as well. I have seen poor reports back on the Bakker novels but I am interested in Glenn Cook now that you have mentioned that it was a direct influence on...

Post Your Syllabus For Modern Fantasy

Re: Post Your Syllabus For prModern Fantasy I would have to put in Erikson and GRRM for a syllabus of 'modern' fantasy. I find they add a new element to style that had been lacking in earlier fantasy works; I prefer the really big books, however, I did find the skimpy novels by Ursula Le Guin...

    MP3 audio books

Have you read The Silmarillion? I personally could not torture myself in actually listening to it. However, I think I would enjoy listening to LotR more so than I did reading it.

    Whole or Part

OK I made a mistake, unintentional by far! I would normally always read a series in order, however, just recently, I ordered Reaper's Gale without reader The Bonehunters (which comes before gale)>>> I am mad at myself for that, however Erikson's books could be read out of order in certain cases...

    Authors You Wish You Liked

whoa!!! I can't believe Erikson was actually mentioned in this thread :O. I know GotM was a hard entry into the series but after I just can't think of a more intriguing author. As for me though, on topic, I wish I liked Tolkien... With all he put into his world and books its amazing I don't...

Hi again everyone.... been awhile since I have logged in. Just finished Reapers Gale by Steven Erikson and would like to ask if anyone has any recommendations for reading while I await the next installment. Already been thru GRRM btw :).

    Which series is your favorite?

I agree, I read all the books in their order.. all nine; I still feel that the best book of the nine was the last book in the Tawny Man, yet, the best of the 3 series, and my personal fav, being Liveship Traders.

Is this author the author for me?

I still believe you could skip the first book, go straight to the second, however, I feel it is important to read the first book before going on to Memories of Ice.

    Just started

I found the first book a really hard read but had to push through because I had two others on my shelf to go. I am glad I did... The second book brings more into the STORY and then the third book gets more into the characters and the main plot. By the time you get into the fourth book (as I am...

Is this author the author for me?

I must agree with knivesout on this; you CAN break the cycle and read book 2 ahead of Gardens of the Moon. They are not particularly linked until later in the series.

Is this author the author for me?

True that Erikson's books are a harder read but at the same time they were more interesting and I looked forward to reading them even more so than GRRM's books. It took me nearly 4x the amount of time to get through an Erikson book than a GRRM book but that is a plus for me. I am now on book...

    Just started

I was skeptical at best when deciding to order Malazan series and read them in comparison to GRRM. You could try this, that is true; you will not succeed. In the first book GotM, I felt I would be disappointed, however, you reach into the next few books and realize there is no way to compare the...

    Deadhouse Gates

Memories of Ice has to be one of my top 5 best reads; I have read at least 200 fantasy novels and Erikson is a the level of genius as Erikson and the further you go with his series the further his genius presents itself. When I first came to the forums here I had only read one modern genius in...

Why is Erikson like Marmite? (please, non-fans too!)

Agreed on this. GOTM can turn alot of ppl off because you are thrown into something immediately and it is fully confusing with little character backgrounds or developement; I, at first, did not like this. However, after DHG I found it a necessity for him and his style and fairly genius. His...

Why is Erikson like Marmite? (please, non-fans too!)

Exactly... tis why I don't have time to get on much and post; I can get on and browse for a few seconds and then something comes up. Good to here yours is doing well! Ours is 6weeks now and she is doing very well also.

Why is Erikson like Marmite? (please, non-fans too!)

AYE I am still around and I check in from time to time when I have time. With the baby I have had less time and with work even less. You will LOVE Deadhouse when you get to it; it deviates from Gardens of the Moon a bit to where you are reading a parallel storyline but yet you will find...
