Not sure where to put this

Well, I'd like to thank everybody who commented on this. It took me getting reassured on the thread that dusty mentioned for me to calm down enough to conciser everything you all were saying, even BEFORE my more in depth description of what i was working on, coupled with a discussion of said...

    Writing outdoors

'outside' around here is basically unbearable for me during the warmer months. too many insects buzzing around me, and i hate being pestered by them. don't hate them directly, i just wish they'd leave me alone, yanno? But yeah, i have a hard enough tiem finding a time and place to not be...

    Plotter enjoyment

I've been a 'plotter' for a really long time. whatever project i work on, i find myself thinking about and going over the same scene in my head multiple times before i finally find the time to sit down and actually write it, and sometimes it can be a bit of a let down when the thing you put on...

    Nasally taken poisons?

The only 'nasally' administered poisons I know of are aerosolized, and they don't enter your bloodstream through the nose, it happens in the lungs. Basically, poison gas works through complete inhalation down into the lungs, not just entering the nose.

Not sure where to put this

Ok, firstly, I would like to thank people for the interest in this, it means a lot, honestly. That having been said, I suppose I only have myself to blame when I say that the advice I've been getting is much appreciated, but only semi-useful. I'm going to have to share a few more worldbuilding...

Not sure where to put this

Hey everyone. Been a really, really long time since I was here last. In that time i wrote a whole rough first draft of a novel that's been in my head for a long time, and made plans to go through ti a second time from scratch and make use of what i learned the first time, and revamp almost...

    publishing question: On Magical metals.

I suppose the general concensus is: Steer clear of mythril, and try to make your own magic metals. I suppose it's for the best. i do enjoy the challenge of worldbuilding. this is just another piece i need to work on.

    publishing question: On Magical metals.

Oh there are plenty of other classic mythical metals that nobody would think twice about using. like Orichalcum (Ancient greek mythical super metal, from the atlantis legends). It's just mythril has kind of become the ruler by which all other mythical metals are measured against. one step...

    publishing question: On Magical metals.

There are many, from mythology, and from popular fictions and videogames, but while many have been widely public domain for a very long time, one in particular, while widely used, traces it's roots directly back to Tolkien: Mithril. Its been purposefully misspelled many a time (Mythril...

    Need a scientist?

The scales are usually on the 'struts' or digits on the wing, or anywhere there's muscle and bone. but i digress. Thanks Chris. you're so widely knowledgeable. it's amazing.

    Need a scientist?

I'm sorry i don't have an answer for you Arkose, i came here with a question i needed answering. The story i'm working on concerns dragons, as you could probably tell from my avatar i'm a huge fan of the big beasties. what i'm trying to figure out is an aspect of a 'realistic' biology...

    Gender dimorphism and Acceptable limits

My question comes in two parts, that are loosely related by the primary, slightly embarrassing focus. You'll see what i mean. In any fantasy world building exercise, you come upon details that, may seem small at first glance, but if you give them thought you find a number of different...

    Need a scientist?

a world building question, particular to any biologists who have experiance. Eyes. Eyes that are built for seeing great distances, like an eagle, and eyes built for excellent night vision, like an owl. Are the mechanisms that grant each of these kinds of eyes their special...

    Need a scientist?

A wealth of knowledge in a neat post. This is going to help immensely. The 'mobile charcoal burning camp' idea seems like it'd be very interesting as far as cultural background. Mined coal would probably be traded for at ports for the most part, and those who did in fact own local coal...

    Need a scientist?

It's a pretty heavily forested area, but backed by mountains (on the other side of which is a highland tundra), so there'd be plenty of wood for making charcoal. especially since the people in this story mostly live in wood houses. Also, isn't Zinc and copper actually brass?

    Need a scientist?

Right, ok. *Ahem* My question concerns Mining and metallurgy, which is an important factor in any Medieval fantasy story i suppose. Anyway, I know bronze, that durable alloy, is created from a blend of Copper and Tin. what i don't know is how much of one or the other is needed to...

    Need a scientist?

So... we can ask any kind of scientific question here, and perhaps get an informed reply? (sorry, just back from a long absence.)

Maintaining your enthusiasm - what's the trick?

you have no idea how often this has happened to me. I recently passed 100k words in my novel project. i've had numerous hangups just like that. and i'm STILL trying to figure out ways to get past it. it's not that i have writer's block, per-se, i basically KNOw what i want to write...

    What's in a blurb?

We've all seen them, perhaps they're why we bought that one book, wether or not it was a good story inside was something else. But what IS that abbreviation on the back of a book SUPPOSED to contain, really? My take so far is a brief overview of the book's opening to it's midpoint...

    Writing Accents

me, i personaly just have other characters notice the different inflection and then describe it, without interfering with the actual dialogue. it adds a kind of spice the reader lays down by themselves.
