NaNoWriMo2015

Keep going DG. A few more 4600 word days and you will be close! 35K is nothing to scoff at either dude.

I am slowing down, and burning out. Still have 10,000 to go, but I'm confident I will get 'er done.

I didn't do a blog on week 3. I didn't want to throw away words I desperately need for my book. I will do an end of month recap one though.

edit: I have noticed that my action scenes are written much faster than my others, so in my rewrites I may need to add a couple more of those, or extend them. I am reaching a big climax part of the book now at around 50,000 words in the book, and then I have a whole other section to add after these next 10,000, so I expect a 80-90,000 finished product. After this NaNo, we'll see how long it takes me to write the rest of these words. Still hoping for the end of December.

I think that's what NaNo is all about -- for me, at least. We all write at different speeds, and I suffer from arthritic hands which affects my typing speed horribly. For every 1,000 words I type, there's a world of pain and frustration (fingers hitting wrong keys or missing entirely), but that's another thousand to work with, another stroke of the brush on canvas, helping to turn a few squiggles into an amazing, three-dimensional picture--*

*Or at least, that's the intention, anyway.
I have a tablet app that allows me to do speech to text. You have to correct a lot but it cuts the initial typing and let's you get the boilerplate of the ideas down. You end up going back and readding and adding. But it can help. I have a rotator cuff injury from when I was a kid that makes the hand go numb sometimes, and this is what I came up with.

On tablet you can get dragon naturally speaking for free. Its the best out there. I however use a cheap Korean similtron. The reason being is it has its own word processing program with a direct to email/ direct to cloud one touch button.

That's a great idea, @Mad Alice. Can you get it on an ipad. or just android tablet? I got a free ipad through the school....
There is a different one for iPad then what I use, but there is a form of it, and dragon naturally speaking itself is Mac and apple product friendly. You might need a bluetoothy microphone if ambient noise is creating distortions in your message transfers. If you have one from a phone that would usually work without purchasing another product. For my laptop there is also a free program you can download. I had to purchase a headphone microphone attached set up, but I found out if you have a similar microphone earpiece from a video game system with a similar plug, it will work great. I just went to the 99p and got a setup that looks like someone mugged a DJ from the 1970's for use upon my laptop. Bulky but it works, if you can quell the constant urge to start singing, "Disco, disco duck..". But the price was right. And I saved loads of money..( Which unfortunately didn't make it too far past the choccies...).

Paper port notes will allow all notes. Photo notes, video audio, etc.

These are all free to download, by the way. Just be careful of your files sizes.

Happy and taking a chance to breath easy. Now sitting on 51,534 words - and have validated my win on the Nanowrimo site. Quite pleased with the result, I must say! Only trouble is, I think there is at least 30k left in this story! But hey, it's all new. I had nothing of this novel before November 1st. It's all pantsing, no planning, and it is holding together so far. So I will likely see it through to it's logical conclusion. And hey, suddenly, I have a new fantasy novel to add to the library!

So gang, only a couple days left. I will be doing a blog about my experience when this is all over. I can't believe I'm almost there to be honest. Even when I started all rosy cheeked and pumped, a part of me doubted the possibility of me finishing a whopping 50,000 words. For a short story guy, that is a daunting figure. Here I am writing on Saturday afternoon, with a little over 5,000 words to go for the month. I'm going to try to get another 1000 down today to make the last couple days a little smoother, but by God I am actually sick of writing at this point. It has become a chore!! One I am thankful for but a little trying nonetheless.

So here's that little push as we close in on the end of November, and everyone should be proud of themselves whether you get the word count or not. Progress is progress, and everyone who tried it got something out of it.

Well played Ratto!

I stopped today. As I kind of expected it was a bit of feast and famine for me - sometimes days went by with nary a word being committed to paper, and on a few days I managed to slap down around 4,500. Work and family commitments were, as ever, numerous, so I had to squeeze in shifts whenever I could.

In the end I made my personal target of 35,000 words... just! Got to 35,004 last night and took the day off today. I know it's not 50,000 like some other troupers have managed, but I'm happy, and my novel has been given a good kick start to life, so I'm pleased.

Well done to everyone who participated. Whether you reached the goal or not, personal or official, it's always a good thing when challenge yourself. You learn so much about yourself and your process, and it always improves something about your creativity.

I didn't participate, but I've very much enjoyed following all of the progress you've all been making this month. Good work! :)

Thanks to everyone who played along in this thread. It was good to have a little encouragement and see what you guys are doing.

I can't believe it's over and I actually did it. Congrats to anyone who tried, got some words down, and to those who finished.

And to Kerry who writes 50,000 a week! ;)

:)
I did it!
(What can I say? I like to talk a lot! :D)
Was stuck near the middle beginning part but then was listening to King of the Road by Roger Miller, had a new character idea for a transient wizard love interest, and we were off! (Unfortunately he was turned into a Dragon at the end, but his magic hasn't suffered, and the household seems to be adjusting. Every castle needs a dragon anyways, right?)
It needs a very hard rewrite. And as I read through, only about 37893 of the words are truly keepable. The rest are.. Well.... Mulch. But I hope that after an intense paring down (and undumbing up) to salvage about two thirds of it.
My final word count was 95338 precious little seed words. Quite stinky-poo at the moment, but once I clean out the nasty bits, I hope to have a lovely little story baby of 67000 words or so.

I got it done but it needed my head down this week. Fortunately I was still sick so nobody is expecting much else from me. Only got a little bit left to write now then a major editing job.

Thank you DG! Had to go upin the desktop to confirm the word count. It never let me confirm from the mobile app. That little process of file transfer was problematic at best. Had an agonizing bit there at the end where instead of saving my sub file, it deleted it.

After I started breathing again, I checked and the initial copy file hadn't been deleted, just everything else. I had sent most of the missing bits to myself in a message, so lots there, then I went back into my tablet and sent through another bundle, even finding two chapters I had missed in the initial run through. So sixty three thousand words lost, twelve thousand found, and I have to rewrite anyways, so not a huge deal. Besides I really enjoyed writing that masquerade ball scene the first time, a second run through will be a treat.

And I won't have a bit of this slug business from you DG, do you hear? You were only slightly undercount, and ALL your words are bloody fab to begin with! So none of that young man. You are much further ahead with your nicely trimmed ready to wear bundle all sewn up together neatly.
My stitches all need to be taken out and rewoven, even.
So, in fact you have not only won, but skipped a step right on to edited sub-able work. :)

Thank you Alice. There can be no greater testament to your eternally sunny disposition than describing my missing the target by 15000 words as only slightly undercount! :D

Not sure about it being all sewn up nicely though. I'm nearing the midpoint of the novel, at which point my crystal ball gets a bit murky and I start to pants... Still, I'm excited about where it's going.

And I look forward to seeing your MS in due course!

DG. 35,000 is awesome. I've never come close to that before this month so you should be proud buddy!

Way to go Mad Alice and Anya!!

I did it!

I got it done but it needed my head down this week.

Congratulations to everyone who finished, great job!

I started out pretty strong but lost steam after a couple of weeks as other things got in the way (poor excuse I know). I'm electing not to reveal my final word count but on a positive note I will say that I'm still working on my NaNoWriMo novel. Maybe by next November I'll have my first draft completed. :)
