November 2015: What Are You Reading?

So far this month:
The Night Has a Thousand Eyes by Cornell Woolrich[...]

A favorite of mine, packing a lot of creepiness into a small package.

Right now, nearing the end of Cotton Comes to Harlem by Chester Himes. Himes was among the first (if not the first) Black mystery writers, and his depiction of Harlem and its inhabitants, Black, white and Hispanic, is not always pretty, but is often funny in a gallows humor way. It is also often uncomfortable because what he says about race relations still applies today.

finished with Richard kadrey Sandman slim series :) not bas but i'm still not sure if i like it or i just like the atitude of the character.... the Raising hell, a novella. now The rules of supervillainy

I'm about 270 pages into Jack Campbell's Dauntless, the first book in his 'Lost Fleet' series. Must admit, I'm not particularly liking it, which is a pain considering I bought the whole series when they were in the Kindle sale a few weeks back

Damn, I've missed it. I read Dauntless and rather liked it but I from what I remember there's no sudden changes in the plot or writing after page 270 - it doesn't turn into a someone's dream, or an allegory about why fluffy bunny rabbits are evil:(

Finished Overlord by Golemon. Loved it.

Finished Sphere of Influence by Kyle Mills. Liked it but it was a bit slow and talky for me.

Started Pandora's Curse by Jack Du Brul.

Finished Marc Turner's When The Heavens Fall - A Grimdark Fantasy elements of which remind me of Game of Thrones. Anyone who's looking for something with multiple characters to follow might want to give this one a try.

Looks quite interesting, think I might give it a whirl.(y)

After reading and loving Max Barry's Jennifer Government, I've started on his Lexicon. It's got the same dark comic undercurrent and is shaping up to be a good read so far...

I've never read that, but there used to be an online game based on Jennifer Government. I forget how detailed/simple it was (it was largely to promote the book, but was entirely free, from memory).

I've started on his Lexicon.

I enjoyed Lexicon. I'm not usually a big thriller reader, but it had good writing and pacing and some strong ideas, from what I remember.

I'm currently on Malazan book five: Midnight Tides. The departure from the settings and characters of the first four books was a bit hard to take at first, but I got over that by setting it down for a few days and then treating it almost as an unrelated story. About 300 pages in, it's now becoming one of my favourites.

I'd almost given up on finding an epic fantasy series that really gripped me (and which is actually complete) and it feels great to finally have one. Like being a teenager again!

Turns out it's still there:

There's also an interesting account of Max Barry's journey to getting published on his website:

I spent many a happy hour reading through the series. I discovered it before it was finished though so I had the interminable year or so wait between volumes for the last few books:(

Joshua dalzelle warship, ( not bad but kind of a repetition of ark royal theme), Christopher g nuttall - a small colonial war :) ark royal 6; crimson shore with pendergast; and aliance from galactic wars series :)

just coming to the end of "A Second Chance" - Jodi Taylor (book 3 of the St Mary's series) which I've thoroughly enjoyed. Next up is going to be Book 2 in "The Southern Watch" series by Robert J Crane

Finished Du Brul's Pandora's Curse.

Started The Janson Directive by Robert Ludlim.
i prefer the oregon files... didn't like before that :) but them the oregon are based on na idea by clive cussler so... the problem with janson is that robert is dead so he can't put any input in new books based on his characters. the Jason diretive might have has some input but the others...

Earlier in the month I read "The Hydrogen Sonata" by Iain M Banks, not one of his best Culture books but not bad.
Then I re-read "Under The Dome" by Stephen king, enjoyed it just as much the second time round.
Now I'm reading "One Summer: America 1927"(the same year my mother was born) by Bill Bryson.
It's very well written, if you think some of our politicians are badly behaved then read this.
You may not agree with me but some of the things that went on then make some aspects of todays society seem a lot more civilized.

actually change of plan - book 3 of the St Mary's series ended on a massive cliff-hanger so I've shot straight on onto book 4 and postpone book 2 in the "Southern Watch" series until after

I finished Warrior by Nick Webb, the second of the Legacy Fleet series. It was a quick, fun read. Good ol' fashion SF fun.

I also grabbed The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins from the library. I had to see what drove so many people to read this book this year, and I get it now. It was a cool story. The story slowly peeled away like an onion, in the Gillian Flynn kind of storytelling way. It kept me turning pages and I read it in two days!

I am not sure where I'm going from here...will have to check the kindle to see what is up next.
