Guardians of the Galaxy (2014)

I can't wait for the sequel. A wonderful film.(y)

Watched this with the family - no one seemed overly enthusiastic at first, but when it finished they'd all really enjoyed it. The humour was really great, especially the pop culture references. Kevin Bacon, 'nuff said. :)

Just watched it again on DVD and yup! Still love it. Mother-in-law chuckling away beside me, so a definite crowd-pleaser. :D

I love the bit where:

Rocket Raccoon is explaining his prison breakout plan to the rest of the gang and then Groot goes and pulls the wire before Rocket could say that that needs to be the last thing done. LOL!

i loved it thought they really didnt need to pay Vin Diesel (probably stupid amounts) for his role as Groot... anyone couldve done the minimal lines he had!

My take on it, from my SFF blog: http://sciencefictionfantasy.blogspot.co.uk/

Guardians of the Galaxy attracted good reviews when it came out earlier this year. I expected yet another superhero movie but in fact it's more in the mould of Star Wars. After a surprisingly serious and rather grim opening scene the action leaves the Earth, never to return, and the mood lightens. The hero is Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) the only Earth human in the plot, a young man who has been brought up on a spaceship which is home to the Ravagers, a group of outlaws.

The adult Quill is first encountered when recovering an enigmatic artifact from an abandoned planet, one which attracts a great deal of unwelcome interest from some of the most dangerous beings in the galaxy. He spends much of the film being pursued, repeatedly losing and recovering the artifact, before its true nature is revealed. Along the way he collects an assortment of allies, including a green-skinned woman modified as a combat specialist (Zoe Saldana), a powerful warrior on a revenge mission (Dave Bautista), an intelligent, genetically-engineered raccoon, and a mobile tree (presumably channeling an Ent, but less chatty).

This odd assortment of characters travelling on a mission is faintly reminiscent of Farscape, but that was aimed at a more adult audience than GotG which has the style of the comic-book superhero strip it is based on, at the juvenile end of the spectrum. The characters are one-dimensional caricatures and the plot is simplistic. What saves it for adults is the humour running through it – in fact, it is best enjoyed as a spoof; the kiddies can be wowed by the action and spectacular CGI while their parents have a good laugh.

It was definitely not what I expected. :D

Just watched this on DVD and was blown away by how well done it is. James Gunn should be making the Star Wars and Star Trek movies from now on.

I'm not a fan of Marvel superhero films but started hearing good things about GOTG, so popped off to the cinema one afternoon to see it. It was the closest experience I have had (as an adult) to seeing Star Wars as a kid. It was fresh, cool, funny and at times very touching. The characters were all so likeable, entertaining and endearing. I was completely drawn in. I went home and immediately bought the soundtrack, art of book and pre-ordered the Blu-Ray. I haven't done anything so geekish like that since before I got a job on The Phantom Menace!

Agreed, It's an immensely entertaining film. (y)

Drof is Groot, which needs space-raccoon ears to be understood. Just watched this last night and was surprised. Good fun with plenty action and Groot is great. ****

Its too bad the animated tv series is so forgettable.

Thanks for the warning... but it obviously needs the full cast now, they are some memorable characters which work very well together. No doubt there will be a sequel. I missed the comic series, yeaRs ago, but this is my only 'superhero' interest now... GOTG!!! (P.S. I am not Groot)

GOTG was hugely entertaining. Possibly my favourite Marvel film so far.
I remember being hugely skeptical at first. A talking Racoon???!!!

Yeah, the racoon put me off too. Then I read the reviews. Best fun this year, hands down. I am Groot. Ha, inspired.
