5.12: The Walking Dead - Remember

As John Oliver would ask concerning Alexandria: How is this still a thing?

Walls which are of questionable integrity from a walker horde attack certainly could not withstand the onslaught of armed and organized marauders. The existence of Alexandria could not possibly have remained undiscovered for this long by the likes of the Governor or the hungry barbecuers of Terminus; and this seeming place of refuge would have been long since taken, sacked or both.

Looks like Rick's group is going to do the deed. I only hope that the violence to ensue is justified by self-defense.

I think that they are supposed to have travel quite some distance (they were in Atlanta and surrounds) and are now just outside Washington so it's quite possible that no-one from the original location would know of Alexandria. However that doesn't mean that there wouldn't be other groups nearby...

I agree, I think that the mention of evacuation of the area during the outbreak is important here. There would have been fewer people left in the area and fewer Walkers around now. That would explain why the shops still have toilet rolls. That might explain why large herds of Walkers didn't break down the flimsy walls, but it doesn't explain why a roaming gang of paramilitaries hasn't taken it over already. I'm certain there is a big secret that we haven't had exposed yet. It most likely does have to do with the present location of the architect husband.
