Do u think any of gemmell books will make it to the big screen

im a huge fan of DG's books and are hoping to start film school next year, ive always thought they'd be perfect for the big screen and since they meant alot to me growing up id definatly want to do them justice. If i ever get the chance "the first chronicles" will be my first choice.

I would love to see 'The King beyond the gate' made into a movie, just wishfull thinking on my part though *sighs*

There are plenty of examples of good books being made into good films. Lotr is a great series, and some of the recent marvel adaptations have been very creditable. There's always a way to make the film loyal to the original work. And as for legend, it couldn't be more difficult to make than return of the king. Dg's works are great but they are far from possible to do justice to in this day and age.

Anyone playing any Gemmelian hero, to me, should be a proficient, seasoned, serious martial artist, rather than a box-offfice star with limited actual fighting prowess, like Brad Pitt or Eric Bana. Not that I have anything against either Brad or Eric, they're both great actors, I think. But if you wanna see realistic as well as beautiful, sophisticated moves with hard core fighting, then I dont think they fit the bill.

Someone of the calibre of Steven Seagal, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Dolph Lundgren or the likes of them, I'm thinking. Sorry I'm unable to quote other guys of the newer generation, cos my time was earlier. Maybe Jason Statham.

I'm rather surprised that nobody who produced any Van Damme movie never read any Gemmel book.

Gemmell film should never happen...

I spose the only bonus to a Gemmell film would mean more people reading his book. So they can say they preffered it to there friends to sound interesting and witty, for having actually read a book and all (and in all honesty I'd rather pretencious gits like that didn't read them because then good sites like this would be flooded with bandwagon jumpers)

The big problem with the film industry is they slaughter good books to make decent films.

I mean I'm hoping that If they ever do make a DG Film (Series) they do it right and not butcher it
I thought David's Troy trilogy, at least to a certain extent, rode on the the publicity n impact of its Hollywood counterpart.

But it came out several years afterword and its more like historical fantasy.

Numbers wise it sold like Gemmell books. Film rarely do anything for their books unless they are LOTR level,HP.

Alternative-historical fiction, I would say.

For example, Homer said that Achilles more or less overwhelmed Hector, whupped his arse big time. David said it was an almost equal fight between two physical supermen, Achilles just edging Hector due to Achilles being much younger. Achilles died first due to poison, placed on Hector's sword to destroy Hector's almost godlike superhero image.

Homer: Helen was a exceptionally beautiful , had "the face that launched a thousand ships".
David: Helen was a quite simple, rather plain looking woman.

Homer: Priam was a soft, gentle king
David: Priam was a supermacho, superconfident, man-among-men hard man type of Trojan monarch. A ladies man, had a roving eye for the girls, constantly on the lookout for his next bedroom conquest. Anyone was fair game for him, including his son's wives.

Homer: Achilles was blonde, Hector was dark haired.
David: Achilles was dark haired, Hector was golden haired.

Maybe a professional wrestler, or ex-professional wrestler, could play a Gemmelian hero n excel in his role, too.

I just recalled, that Dwayne 'the Rock' Johnson looked quite credible, impressive, even, as a sword-wielding warrior king in 'the Scorpion King', a while back.

I was thinking 'The Rock' could pull off Druss pretty well, too. Movies can never do everything that the books do, but I'm sure it would still be fun to watch. I liked The Scorpion King a lot, and the plot to that was nowhere near as good as Legend.

(First post after a lot of lurking!)

I'd like to see Legend in an animation, like the old Manga type films. Fist of the North star springs to mind, gritty and bloody. that way hollywood couldn't butcher the story and make it a PG13 for mass market release

I truly hope none of David's work ever make it to the big screen but if they do I hope that Stella Gemmell will oversee the project(s) from the beginning to the end and don't do ***** without her consent and/or approval.

They already did that one. It's called "The Outlaw Josey Wales." :)

Seriously, that's exactly who I thought of when I started reading the Waylander books. I could even picture Clint (the young Clint - from the 80s!) playing the part. Good stuff.
(Hereoes in the Shadows is my favorite - gotta love Yu-Yu!)

I also think Kebra the bowman could be played wonderfully by Scott Glenn.

Clint was already an fairly old by the 80's. He did The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly in 1966. That's where he's at his best. He might do well in Shannow.

I don't think that Gemmell was not a fan of his books being turned into film, it was more the fact the he lost the rights (and therefore the control) of his characters which was why he kept turning the movies down. I can only assume he wanted to retain rights of his characters as he wanted to write more about them in the future, but, unfortunately, as we know, that is no longer an option, so a movie might be made.

I think Peter Jackson would do the books justice, he seems to be a little more grounded than other Hollywood directors.

Why not? He tells a good story His books are perfect for the big screen.(y)

I seriously PRAY that you are being sarcastic!

Any two-bit director with a vaguely competent choreographer could make even Danny DeVito look like a kung fu master

Any two-bit director with a vaguely competent choreographer could make even Danny DeVito look like a kung fu master. To play any main character from a Lord G story you need to cast an ACTor and number 1 on the list is a native sounding British accent (Scottish in the case of Druss). That box ticked, next you require your cast members to be able to effectively portray the characters' emotional and psychological complexities.

There are other boxes too. Lots of them. And right down at the very bottom, the least important priority when casting is looking good while fighting.
