It's official

I'm guessing this is common knowlege but in case ya'll havn't heard. . .

Zachary Quinto is going to play spock in the next ST movie. Well, I guess I'll watch it and keep an open mind. Maybe a good reinvention is what this thing needs. Or maybe it just needs to be left alone.

well he is quite Spock like

is Matt Damon still playing Captain Kirk or is that an old debunked rumour?

I was never much of a ToS fan so in all honesty I'm not that bothered about what they do the cast - well interested to see it anyways

No word on who will play Cowboy Kirk. I think they are looking for someone a bit younger than Matt Damon.

Actually I texted my friend about this and she says Gary Sinise is down for Dr McCoy

She also said Robbie Williams was down for Captain Kirk but not the pop singer Robbie Williams. However I did a search on google about this and although the Gary Sinise rumour comes up the Robbie Williams rumour only seems to refer to Robbie Williams the pop singer and definitely isn't true.

The only actors listed so far on the IMDB site are Leonard Nimoy and Zachary Quinto

I heard this on Radio 1 a couple of weeks ago... I could've sworn the DJ said "Robin Williams". Either the casting director is mad, or I misheard four or five times. :p

My initial response to that question is that they could only improve on TOS so why not remake it. But then quality on Star Trek movies is very unreliable. I give it a 2 out of 3 chance of making something better but if they make something worse, it will probably be waaaaaaaaaaaay worse. Maybe they could get a trilogy and make a nice arc with lots of tension. . . Sigh.

I'm a trekkie but I never really liked TOS.

however I am a bit of a special effects junkie and I find it hard to watch most sci fi shows or films which haven't aged well

I hear ya. The suspension of disbelief can be tough when the “future” doesn’t match the present. I think it was actually TOS movies that sort of turned me against them. I think it’s a problem with ST movies in general when the wrong person is on the project. If someone isn’t versed well enough in the history and mythology then the movies can feel out of place. First Contact was a J. Frakes project and it was probably the best ST movie and then some outsider made Nemesis which was the worst ST movie ever. In order for something to be justified into a movie instead of just a TV episode they should really crank up the scale and sense of wonder. Then again I think Shatner directed the second worst movie.
