The New Companion

OMG: certainly a surprise. Wonder how they'll get her back into the TARDIS after the last escapade. And whether she'll be the same character or, like Freema, be slightly different. Oops, if I'd actually read the flyer I'd have read that she is indeed reprising the role of Donna.

Hmmmm: "more ambitious storylines" sounds questionable, but "a whole host of guets stars" should be okay so long as they're done sensibly.

PS. Did anyone else think that the first aging of the Doctor (when it was still David in the prosthetics) looked like Catherine Tate's "Derek"?

OH....PLEASE...LORD...NO!

I could just about tolerate that whiny, irritating character for the duration of the christmas special, but the thought of her being a TARDIS regular is actually enough to make me not watch any episodes she's in. Why can't they just make Kylie a regular instead?

Admittedly, that was my first thought, too. I didn't like Catherine Tate in the Christmas special, but maybe she'll be different in the series.

She is too well known for a whole series, she is faar to Screeechy and god damn annoying for a whole series.

I was hoping this was a joke, but as it isn't I agree with Coolhand.

When I first heard the news I thought I was the one who had time-travelled - to April 1st!! This decision is so laughable it makes me whince and cringe to just think about it. An absolutely abysmal, atrocious decision. She was pathetic in the Xmas special, virtually ruined it. The thought of her in a 13-episode run makes me despair.

The sooner RTD is far away from anything to do with the future of Dr Who, the better IMO.

Just been glancing through the user comments on this story at the bottom of the BBC webpage and it looks like we ain't the only ones who think this is a dumb idea...
The replacement for Tate that keeps getting suggested is Sally Sparrow from Blink.

Agreed Agreed Agreed Agreed

I can't stand her, she is not funny, and her character in the last christmas special was abismal. i'm seriously thinking of not watching the next series. which is a shame becuase i love dr who...

I can't understand all the vehement anti-Catherine Tate sentiment i've read today on this thread and others. Surely, there's no denying her acting talent. I agree that RTD & co. will need to develop the character somewhat but i imagine they'll do that anyway. And the Christmas episode wasn't that bad, was it? Was it? *tumbleweed blows across The Chrons*. Ok, it's just me that thought it was ok, then.

No, I certainly didn't hate it and I actually quite like Catherine Tate. I really didn't expect her to be picked as his next companion though!

I enjoyed how Tate was sarcastic and tetchy towards The Doctor, it was a nice change. But I agree that if she's going to be around for thirteen weeks, there will definitely have to be much character development and less constant sniping and screeching :D

It's not so much Tate herself (although I have to admit I find her actual comedy show about as funny as a DIY finger amputation) it's more Donna the character she plays that I cannot stand. Shouty, screechy, stupid, selfish, whiny, aggressive and sarcastic in an oh-so-unfunny way. She ruined the Xmas special for me, and I simply don't think I can take 13 more episodes of her. Donna is like fingernails down a chalk board, and combined with the awful nature of this season's final ep I'm seriously losing interest in whatever RTD serves up next year.

I'm in two minds with this, on the one hand I do absolutely love Catherine Tate as a comedian/comedy actress, on the other, I'm not sure I could do 13 weeks of Donna.

Saying that, Donna was a good character and she too, seemed to understand the Doctor and what he was about, in one episode she got him and managed to bring his temper under control and she was painfully honest with him, I think she'll be good for him and it'll be interesting to watch the sparks fly with her and Martha...

xx

Donna was in only in 1 episode.... The Christmas Special

Although I take your point. Watching too women catfighting (probably in mud or baked beans) is the sort of thing Dr Who's new-improved target audience can watch and applaud. I expect it will win a BAFTA next year as well.

To be fair, I think it's a case of "wait and see." You never know, she may surprise everybody.

What, you don't like what he's done to drag a moribund, cancelled show back to the point where over nine million people watched it last week? And now you want rid of him because of a decision that we won't even be able to evaluate until next year!
Seems a bit premature ........
