I heard rumours of this earlier, but a big announcement at midnight has revealed it to be true.

There will be a special half an hour show on Sunday at 7pm to reveal and have the first interview with the next Doctor.

Widely regarded as one of the most hotly contested roles in British television, the show's host Zoe Ball will unveil the 12th Doctor in the first ever interview in front of a live studio audience set against the backdrop of a swirling vortex, amongst Daleks and the TARDIS.

The half hour show will include live special guests, Doctors old and new, as well as companions and celebrity fans.

BBC - Blogs - Doctor Who - The Next Doctor will be revealed on Sunday, 04 August!

Zoe Ball and everything! :D

Feels a bit...over the top and just another example of turning literally anything into a tv show (makes me think of the talent show result episodes where it's 90% filler, 10% stuff it's actually revealing) but it'll be nice to know Who's next.

Definitely over the top, yeah, but they probably think it's acceptable because this is the 50th Anniversary year.

I guess, as well, because there's a media frenzy whenever a new Doctor or companion is announced, this gives the Beeb the chance to get on top of it.

Of course, we're all going to watch it, aren't we? :p

It will be interesting to see how the new Doctor reacts, too. If they're an experienced actor, they'll be able to take it in their stride, but if we get another relative unknown? The potential awkwardness!

My surprise will be if the lid is kept on this until the show airs on Sunday evening. I'll be on holiday but I'm sure it will be splashed across the tabloid newspapers on Monday. It really is a big event. NB that it will be simulcast live both on the BBC and BBC America. The latter is telling. Doctor Who has gone from being such a drain on BBC resources and the drama budget, that Michael Grade was keen to kill it off with some vengeance; into a money-spinning, world-wide, revenue-generating, golden-egg-laying phenomenon.

With all the actors and fans attending such a live event, someone must guess and spill the beans on Twitter or Facebook before the announcement is made.

Ooh, I'm glad I checked my TV schedule, because I translated 7pm there into 1pm here for simulcasting, and it turns out it's on at noon here! Guess I was thinking of GMT, and it's on ...whatever the other thing is there. BST?

Arggh, will have to go searching for a Twitch.TV account that is streaming it. So want to watch this live. No doubt by the time a version is made available for download it will have been spoiled... ><

Yes, British Summer Time. All EU countries go onto daylight savings together, normally two or three weeks after you, I think. Plays havoc with trying to co-ordinate calls to the US. ;)

I wouldn't mind seeing this, but can't see it being broadcast here. I'll just have to stay tuned on Chrons. :)

I stumbled across the promo for the show on BBCAmerica and set it to record since I'll be on the road during that time. Of course, since I am very unaware of young actors, I won't know who is Who(pun intended). I probably would be better off waiting until the regeneration and slowly get used to the new face as before. This almost sounds like the program in the US a couple of years ago called "The Decision" where Lebron James took 90 minutes on ESPN to announce which cities' $60,000,000.00 offer he would accept. (I lost all respect for him that day and most of the small amount I had for ESPN). I will admit, I have watched sillier things, though, so I watch the revelation. (Thank God they didn't call it that.)

Hopefully this will be a slightly different setup to The Decision, and won't spoil all the hype-building by announcing the decision five minutes in!

So, no point watching until 7.30 then? :D

Unless a good part of the show consists of some UKBA people chasing the "illegal immigrant" from Gallifrey round the studio - and part of the rest, them chasing the actor for some or other made-up variety of personation - it probably won't be worth watching.

Apparently a good portion of it is going to be advice from past Doctor's and companions, as well as an interview with the new Doctor.

Are we going to spoiler tag the actors name, for those who won't be able to watch it live?

And it begins. Come onnnn Huw Edwards! :p

EDIT: Heh. Twitter is going crazy with - "NERD POPE ANNOUNCEMENT".

Quote of the evening, so far: "I'm really terrified it's Harry Styles".

If it's Sean Bean, we'll know there'll soon need to be another regeneration. (We'll also take that as read if Richard Madden is chosen....)
