I think this thread is needed. I feel stifled at the GOT TV forum, as i think that even referring to anything that happens in the future, no matter how unimportant, is wrong, but I'd like to be able to discuss the show with people who KNOW the books, as you guys and gals do


I'll start off.

I thought the way they planted the seeds of Robert fathering bastards , as well as the fact that Cersei's children ARE bastards, was very well done. It's sort of spoon feeding information to viewers, but it's important that they "get" that, as so much hinges on those facts.


The Tower of joy scene is even more interesting to me after seeing how the dialog about Jon's parentage was handled. My blood" is very different from "my son".

Payne doesn't look big enough to swing Ice, but maybe that was a bad angle.

I hope the crow "dreams" appear in the show. I very much would have liked to have seen the view of the world in the first dream. Maybe we still will. There are certainly enough crows in the promos

Could have had better casting i think!

And i'll ask here again: did Cat find a hair in the books too? I really don't remember that part...

Thanks Imp I agree I find it hard to keep secrets, especially ones I get excited about!

No way is Payne near creepy enough! They should have done a better job there!

I think I said it somewhere else but that "my blood" quote in both the book and the tv series nails down for me that Jon is Lyanna child not Eddard's.

I loved that they made a point with Cersei that Robert's child looked like Robert! (Even if the conversation nor birth never really took place) it puts it out there that Cersei's children are not Robert's.

Hadd, no Catelyn never found a hair. As far as I can remember she didn't know the reason they tried to kill Bran, not exactly anyway.

And I just love seeing Tyrion, makes up for most of the things missing from the books.

Anyway, just managed to make a friend watch the series, and he is in love with it. He can't wait to see the others! I can't wait to see the.....DRAGONS!!!!

And more importantly, can't wait to see the crow dreams. I hate to see things missing from the series

The closest to perfect I can recall is The Godfather 1 and 2

Yea...I'm pretty excited about how they're going to do all the stuff that's yet to come and going to need a lot of CGI probably (dragons, giants, mammoths, wildling magic)...Also Jon and Ygritte - there's some of my favorite passages from the series' romantic side. I hope they don't screw that up (in the distant future but still).

And totally agree with Tyrion. Dinklage is the one making the show likable for me really (not that I really detest it but I seem to be rather critical as ASOIAF is my favorite series).

Both Payne and The Hound look less grim on screen than they did in my imagination. Next thing you know Rorge will look like he could be dubbed as mister fuzzles.

I'm happy with the Hound on screen. He isn't quite as creepy looking as I had imagined, but he will suffice. More so once some of his past is revealed, and as his actions are taken in the present (assuming they aren't all tamed down like the butcher boy butchering was).

Going to agree with everyone's impressions of Payne. The man didn't seem anywhere near intimidating to me.

Catelyn finding the hair seems like it was a good choice. As we all know, and I have seen writen on other threads on this board, not everything from the books will fit into a TV miniseries. Catelyn finding evidance in the tower of the attempted murder of her son gives a quick and straight forward explaination to both the viewer and the onscreen characters a quick discovery of the culprit/s.

While I enjoyed reading of the characters investigation of the Lanisters, it makes sense to me, in a time constrained envornment, to cut that little part. Littlefinger could, I believe, still be in question, at least in part, once the dagger is identified (at the tourney I believe?)

Also, this is off topic for this thread, but as I was thumbing through the latest edition of Time magazine, Martin was listed as one of Time's 100 most influential people of the year. I tried to link to this page time.com/time/specials/packages/article/0,28804,2066367_2066369_2066129,00.html
but I somehow have only posted 9 times in the 6 years I've been lurking around this board.

Kind of makes me feel a bit creepy and stalkery

I think the Hound looks a bit tame so far, I love his helmet but when we saw him the first time on his horse seemed the lower jaw was bouncing. I trust he will look badass when the action starts.

If I am not mistaken Daenerys did not need to get a lesson from one of her slaves on how to please her man, it came to her naturally in the book eh?
They did seem to have a loving relationship in the book too, didnt she call him her "Moon and stars"?

When Joffery attacked the Butcher's boy, didnt Araya hit Joff in the arm with her stick not in the back? And she took him on momentarily too before Nymeria came in.

Where was jaime during all this?

I hope they show how huge the Direwolves get when full grown.
I'm sure getting real wolves would have been too hard to train and film but I feel the Direwolf pups look too tame for now.

She does draw the slave girl aside in the book (can't remember her name. Doreah, maybe?), but we're not privy to the conversation/lesson. I've a feeling that Daenerys thinks something about doing to the Khal what Doreah taught her.

As for "Moon and stars", that comes in later - my guess is in the next episode or two (when we start seeing Viserys being treated badly).

I agree, but I can handle the fact that casting will never match anyone's imagination.

One thing that did gall a little was in ep 2 someone pushes Payne out of the way. I took him to be too intimidating for this to be easily possible.

The Hound isn't what I'd imagine, but the actor carries the tone nicely, and I can see it working.

A big reservation will really be what The Mountain That Rides will look like. Obviously, that's going to be one helluva casting difficulty, as he has to loom. But I think I've already seen pics with him in, and it didn't match up, so the actor is really going to have to project the thing's brutality.

That was actually in the book. I don't remember exactly in what form but at some point Doreah taught Dany how to pleasure a man.

One thing I like is the cinematography, how the characters are often framed centre screen big and bold. I think it goes along way to smoothing the potential jarring for t.v. audiences of having so many characters to deal with.

I do think some of the series fans need to lighten up. There is a clear agenda by the creators to follow the themes and main plot arcs of the novels, however just as there are benefits to tv there are plenty of limitations. I've enjoyed most of the changes and the direction the show is heading, it's not slavish, its enjoyable.

I'm wondering if we'll see some changes that Martin might want to make - i.e. subtle hints he would have put in the books if he could have. Difficult to tell if this is the case obviously but...

I'm enjoying it generally - Drogo and Dany is a bit of a sore point, but I sort of wonder if they're really trying to emphasize how hard her life is. Does make the attempted resurrection a little weird though, so be interesting to see how they play that.

As others have stated, this was indeed in the book. And she called him her 'Sun and Stars', and I believe he called her 'Moon of my Life'.

As in the book, Dany will fall in love with Drogo over time. I thought the series handled their initial lovemaking (if you can call it that) well, given that they then added more tenderness and human connection in the second episode. Forcing him to look at her and take her as a woman, not as a slave, was nice. I see no problem with the credibility of any future scenese based on what we are seeing so far.

I admit when I watched their wedding night scene in the first episode I was a bit disappointed. But after seeing the second episode I think it was very well done, and I see why they made the change.
