What We're Watching.

Oz? Well as long as there are no characters called Tobias Beecher and Verne Schillinger, I'll watch it ;)

Love Oz.
Nope, never heard of those guys :D

Did yiu see the entire run?

Funny you should ask that, because I'm still not sure (it was a long while ago that I was watching it and I lost track of the show on whichever channel I was watching it on).

My memories of the fifth and sixth seasons are sketchy. That said, I know I saw the finale, but I plan on watching them all again (I've got the 1st and 2nd season boxsets and will get the rest when I can afford to splash the cash).

As to last night, I was too tired to make sense of this:

Quote: "Do you remember where Nancy Marchard "made her bones"? (on television)"

But it's still got me stumped.

SHe played Margeret Pynchon, the publisher and ultimate "boss" on Lou Grant (Edward Asner). Remembering her in that role makes her portayal of Livia Soprano even more amazing, but really, everyone was as good. Aida Tortturo (John Torturo's cousin if I'm remembering well before my coffee kicks in) comes to mind when talking about Livia. Clearly NOT someone anyone would want to be involved with, in any way.

Imp - I know I've seen the actress before (possibly many a time) but I'd have been a wee nipper (maybe Bran's age) when Lou Grant was on tv. Plus I'm not sure that it was ever aired in the UK (?). And I'd have never figured the Torturo family connection (love John "the Jesus :D" Turturo).

Anyway, just a quick word before I’m off, but I wanted to give a shout out to everyone here, who will likely receive an invite to be ‘friends’ over the coming days and weeks. I never planned to get caught up in this side of Chronning (anyone seen the South Park episode “You Have 0 Friends”? :D), but recent events have dictated otherwise. If you must blame someone, blame Sephiroth and Wybren. They started it. :) I just hope it doesn’t end with me playing yahtzee on the game grid.

Naturally, as far as I’m concerned anyone who’s a fan of GRRM gets an automatic pass, but feel free to say, “bugger that” and ignore. I’m an adult and I won’t take it personally. What? Who said I would? I won’t! Shut up!

Never heard of 'im. I did google 'Guy Gavriel Kaye' though, and I see he's a fantasy fiction writer (or historical fantasy). Sounds interesting - how would you describe his stuff?

Here's a link to a discussion on the General Book Forum:

http://www.sffchronicles.co.uk/forum/38100-guy-gavriel-kay.html

Great stuff, quite a bit different than GRRM, but the same level of quality. Excellent characters, excellent historical detail, and beautiful stories. Kay is a very lyrical writer, and his prose can just sing at times. Tigana was simply the most beautiful book I ever read. I have Under Heaven (his new one) waiting in my TBR pile.

You have a lot to look forward to. The show jusat keeps getting better IMO, with the introduction of charcters, and consistently good writing. The series isn't perfect, but it comes damn close.

Another great HBO show is Oz, set in the fictional Oswald Sate Correctional Facility. Amazing characters, writing, plotlines, etc.
HBO really does TV right with it's original stuff. As I said before, I think Sopranos takes a big nose-dive in quality in season 5 and I hope HBO learned a thing or two from the issues that caused it. The Wire, Carnivale, Deadwood, Entourage and their newer half-hour show about the writer/PI are great. I'll also recommend Dexter (showtime show) as a fine example of good TV. On the same level as the HBO shows, even better than some of them. Dexter is also a fine example of TV based on a novel. The ASoIaF show is patterned in much the same way, each season based on a single novel.

Lofwyr - It's funny you should mention Dexter, which I love (the 4th season was exceptionally brilliant I thought), cause there's a common link, despite the difference in networks. It was James Manos jr who (unless I'm mistakn) so brilliantly adapted Dexter to the screen. I also noticed James Manos jr listed as a producer of Sopranos and he wrote an episide in the first season.

So far I'm loving Sopranos. There are episodes akin to the best of Oz or Dexter, where practically every single scene leaves you thinking, "that was great stuff". I'm curious to see if I agree on this nose-dive in the 5th (I'm still in the 2nd), but I know some fans had a problem with the series finale as well (an episode of Family Guy once mentioned the abrupt fade-to-black ending). I don't anticipate having a problem with that though, as long as series maintains its, albeit extremely high, standards.

Really want to see Deadwood. Liked what little I saw of that.

Deadwood was awesome. Colourful language, top characters, mud and blood and guns and whores. Im guessing Game of Thrones should be similar - minus the guns.

The current Toy Story was pretty good.

Was really watching octopi, tarpin, puffers, sea cucumbers, sea turtles, angels, parrots, cowfish, jacks, squirrel fish, barracuda, corals, sponges, lobsters, shrimp, crabs, groupers, sergeant majors, other colourful fish unspecified, urchins, anemones and wrecks...

Tried to find kraken.

Drowned God, MIA.

I just saw Inception last Friday. I'm a big DeCaprio fan, going back to his amazing perferomance in What's Eating Gilbert Grape. I won't say much about the movie for fear of spoiling it, so in very general terms, I was glad I saw it, but it was perhaps the most confusing movie I have ever seen. To make matters worse, some of the actors mumbled really badly at points, which made the convoluted plot even harder to follow. I guess I'll have to watch it again when it's released on DVD and turn English subtitles on.

The most confusing movie I ever saw was Eraserhead. By some distance too. I am curious about Inception though, more so now that the clever Imp has lent his approval :D

I recently finished the second season of Sopranos. Truly, truly brilliant. If it keeps this up, then I will thoroughly agree with imp that it is one of the very best ever made. What a season finale...and the humour just keeps getting better.

I'll be taking a hiatus from Sopranos for a bit though to watch the last season of the Shield (which is not exactly the easiest show to jump back into). I think I'll be watching Moon tonight (a British sci-fi flick from last year), which I've heard good things about.

If it's the same Moon I'm thinking about then..... G.R.R.M short story "The second kind of loneliness" has some similarities. Or rather, Moon has similarities to the short story.

I don't know about GRRM's story (and wouldn't say if I did for fear of giving away certain things) but the Moon I just saw was quite excellent.

Not sure if it would be to everyone's tastes, but I certainly thought highly of it - and Sam Rockwell, who was great.

And all that talk of Moon brings to mind Moonstruck, which starred nicholas Cage (along with Cher). Cage just happens to be in the Sorcerer's Apprentice, which, in my quest to see every mediocre movie released in 2010, I saw today. I guess it was a bit better than mediocre, it was decent, but very muchsimplistic and predictable.

Salt is on the table next week. At least I'll be able to see Jolie's collagen filled lips :D

Oh dear, I fear a Mod may kill this thread...

I missed it, only just now saw it. Seeing as though it's survived this long, I'll let it stand for now, but make sure to mix in a bit of GRRM talk now and then or it might disappear.

And, seriously, guys, there's a great big forum out there waiting to be explored! You're all like Lysa Arryn in here, locked away and refusing to acknowledge anything happening outside the Eyrie...

Cheers Cul - though I'm surprised you only just spotted it!

I will, indeed, try to mix in some GRRM relevance at every opportunity. Except now, where I'll just say, "Not in front of the baby!" I won't get a nipple out though :D

I think LOL is WAY overused, but this calls for a very heart LOLOLOLOLOLOL

Some new shows just premiered over the past few days. I'm really sxcited about two of them so far

Boardwalk Empire- Set in Atlantic City, 1920, the story is about "Nucky" Thompson, the totally corrupt town treasurer. Martin Scorcese had a major role in the pilot, and one of the writers from The Sopranos is on board. The pilot was great. Wonderful costumes, background (scenery) detail, writing, acting, etc. If you get HBO you can catch it on demand. Airs Sunday nights at 9 eastern.

The Event was on NBC at 9 EST last night. I found it a bit confusing and need to watch it again, but the story is really compelling and they do a great job of creating tension and maintaining it. I'd recommend it based on what I saw last night.

Chase was "meh" I got bored after a few minutes.

I still need to watch Haven, based on a STephen King novel . It aired on Syfy channel last Friday

Criminal Minds begins it's new season this Weds. It's a great show.

YES, Eraserhead was mind-splitting. Inception is nothing like it at all, I know some people had a problem follwing the story, but I didn't at all. I thought it was facinating.

And In my opinion, with the exception of the second to last season, Sopranos is the best show HBO has ever produced.

I'm guessing that you're calling season 6A the second to last?
