A-Wings – worst spaceship ever created?

Or are there other hunks of junk out in the cosmos less capable of causing harm to invading forces?

Nothing wrong with the A-Wing! Classic retro style. I guess they serve the same purpose for the Rebellion as TIE-Interceptors do for the Empire - quick, agile craft used against starfighters. They're never going to take down a capital ship (unless, say, crashing through the bridge RotJ-style) but then a Y-Wing isn't going to sweep through a wing of TIEs either....

LOL! Yes, I'm sure that's what the Rebellion had in mind when they chose that model!

By the way, I probably should have said that "Any spaceship in 'Starcrash' is worse that the A-Wing".

I would have to say a TIE Fighter is worse.

Or even a Correllian YT 1300. They were a bunch of junk when they were new.

So cool how Lucas gave the Falcon a hundred times more personality than the Enterprise by making it a piece of crap.

Lol the A -wing is as stated above a quick paced fighter craft, a squadron of them could maybe take down a larger vessel like the Lambda shuttles or some Tie Bombers, A wings can turn on a six-pence its obscene how small their turning circle is. I've had the dubious pleasure of trying to nail them in my interceptor on SWG online and they are annoying !
On the YT-1300 I wouldn't say that they are a piece of crap, at times the Falcon was a piece of crap :D Most sizable star wars ships the chassis is of a standard and then its all about what parts you fit in it, as Han would say "i've made a lot of special modifications myself". I really enjoyed one of the books of Han solo where he's had to fit the whole ship out with crap parts cos he got hammered before the book started and couldn't afford good replacements. It made for a ship with some real character to it, refreshing after years of the shiny gleaming models of the federation!

You're right, Warden. The Falcon wasn't really a piece of crap, but it did look like a piece of crap to the characters. I actually like the way it looked. I think maybe they were being too hard on it. The Ebon Hawk and the Outrider make ok substitutes when the Falcon isn't around, but they can't really touch it in the coolness factor.

That's a little unfair. The A wing is a pure dogfighting machine designed purposefully for the task of killing Tie Fighters.

My only memory of them is crashing headfirst into a star destroyer (I think)

It's true that it is an under represented ship in the films however if you look at some of the wider material the A-wing is actually pretty good at what it was designed for- dog fights and groups of them taking on larger ships. It's very hard for larger ships to manage to hit them with their gun battery's. If i was a stinking rebel i would fly an A-wing, however as someone that always plays imperial in games i prefer the interceptor, in particular the crimson interceptor that palpatine gives out to his top guards. :D Its a kick ass ship!

If the A Wing is the worst, what would you consider to be the best and why?

Well, the A-Wing wasn't the most spectacular spaceship.
But it's far from being a piece of junk. There is no worst.
All ships are special in their own way.

Haha, I really disliked A-wings when I played X-Wing Vs TIE Fighter aaaaages ago.

It lacks any sense of style. Interceptors are far cooler.

Sure, it's design is simple. But it's far more interesting than the vehicles we have today, is it not? I would really love to have access to those vehicles.
Even the A-Wing is a far more interesting machine than the average car.

In fairness, the PT Jedi Starfighters were also a bit pants. Besides, different fighters for different missions.

anyone used to play some star wars battlefront 2?
that x-wing was best on that. a wing was crap.

When I play(ed), I always went with the Empire. I guess I have a dark streak in me.

The A-wings were a pain because they were so darned fast, you needed an interceptor and lock-on missiles to take them out.

One of my biggest problems with ROTJ was how the bad guys didn't appear to score even one kill in the dog fight or land battle. Here's the greatest Empire the Galaxy has ever known and they get p'wned without even putting up a fight. Seriously, a one-man fighter hits the bridge and takes out the largest capital ship in the Imperial Navy. Hello? Auxilliary control anyone? (and yes, Piet was one of my favorite characters so it's a little personal).

In the original Star Wars, at least I had a feeling the Empire was bad-arse and somewhat capable. By the end of Jedi, they had more a keystone cops feel.

I have to agree. Even Vader didn't flaunt as powerful a stage presence as he did in The Empire Strikes Back. But I'll excuse them, on the grounds that they just lost the will to fight. The Empire was a stagnant beast, grown complacent, and arrogant, after choosing quantity over quality in the areas of trooper training, and super weapon design.

After the first, more heavily secured, Death Star was destroyed, they should have known not to build a second, and then give away the plans to it on purpose. Palpatine could have at least falsified those plans before giving them to the opposition.

I can't believe that a galaxy spanning empire can decay that quickly. What was it, 30 years? The Roman Empire lasted a lot longer than that.

As for the A Wing, it's a fighter that's fit for purpose. Keeping up with the Ties is all it needs to be able to do.
